Australia considers mass killings of camels
By KRISTEN GELINEAU (AP) – 11 hours ago
SYDNEY — Thousands of camels in Australia's remote Outback could be killed by marksmen in helicopters under a government proposal aimed at cutting down the population of the havoc-wreaking creatures.
First introduced into Australia in the 1840s to help explorers travel through the Australian desert, there are now about 1 million camels roaming the country, with the population doubling every nine years.
They compete with sheep and cattle for food, trample vegetation and invade remote settlements in search of water, scaring residents as they tear apart bathrooms and rip up water pipes.
Last month, the federal government set aside 19 million Australian dollars ($16 million) for a program to help slash the population. Besides sending in sharpshooters in helicopters and on foot, officials are considering proposals to turn some of the creatures into tasty treats such as camel burgers.
Hunters in the United States have shot wolves from helicopters in Alaska in an aerial predator control program there. More than 800 wolves have been killed as part of the program, which has been a point of national controversy since it was initiated five years ago.
Glenn Edwards, who is working on drafting the Australian government's camel reduction program, said the population needs to be slashed by two-thirds to reduce catastrophic damage.
But some remain opposed to a mass slaughter. Camel exporter Paddy McHugh, who runs camel catching operations throughout Australia, said a cull would be ineffective.
"What happens in 15 years when the numbers come back again? Do we waste another $20 million?" McHugh said.
The camels McHugh's associates capture are sold overseas, used in tourism and processed for their meat. In recent years, McHugh said he has seen an explosion in international demand for the animals.
The main problem with trying to capture and export the animals is that they can grow up to 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall and weigh 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms), said Patrick Medway, president of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia.
"You imagine trying to catch a lion or a tiger or an elephant in its native habitat and then bring it back and sell it to another country," Medway said. "It's not an easy thing to do."
Tony Peacock, CEO of the University of Canberra's Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Center, said a cull was the most effective method.
"To be shot from a helicopter is actually quite humane, even though that sounds brutal," he said. "If I was a camel, I'd prefer to just get it in the head."
Mark Pearson, executive director of the animal welfare group Animal Liberation New South Wales, offered another solution: birth control. Giving the animals a drug to render them infertile is far kinder than pumping them full of bullets, he said.
But Edwards said even if you could get close enough to administer birth control, camels still live up to 30 years — meaning decades more damage to the environment.
Edwards favors an integrated approach that would include shooting some of the animals for their meat, with others left behind to decompose. No matter what solution is accepted, Edwards said, waiting much longer to act would be disastrous.
"We need to get moving as soon as we can because we are facing a crisis," he said

In 1837 US Army Capt Beale attempted to introduce camels to America as part of a program to ease cargo transport across America's deserts. for some reason they did not fare well and the program was abandoned.

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd has been labelled a serial killer on US TV for approving the culling of feral camels.
Erin Burnett, an anchor on American financial news channel CNBC, launched a verbal attack targetting Rudd following his government's decision to spend $A19 million to cull feral camels in the outback.
"There is a serial killer in Australia and we are going to put a picture up so we can see who it is," a stern-faced Burnett said during a segment on CNBC on Tuesday.
Watch it here, she gets going on krudd at about 3.15..

talk about right out of PeTA's or the humane society hand book completely laughably ill-informed. Camels aren't native to Australia. They are a feral pest, living in some of the remotest and most environmentally-vulnerable parts of this country and fast growing in numbers
they just don't understand how bad we get it with feral animals

Shoot anything that moves!

Seems a shame to waste a perfectly good horse (though they go make good eating). No way to capture and domesticate? It just seems profitable as a decent saddle horse is about 1K and up in these parts.

they do capture some mostly on the eastern side of the country however you can not imagine how many are up there
there are hundreds of thousands up there just like a lot of the other feral animals they have gotten out of control
you name it they are an issue
it is really the native animals ( apart from Roos ) that are an issue for numbers and they are the ones that need protecting
-
IS the meat used for anything or do ya just let it feed the buzzards? I don't really have a problem either way, over population must be controlled especially non-native species.

in some aria's they do try to harvest them for meat both export and domestic use
however with most of the aria's being very remote logistically it is quite difficult due to the lack of near by cold storage. and transport as some parts are soo remote up that way the cost is not worth the return that you can get.
and as i said the numbers are soo high they need to get a dent on to the numbers first.

Sure would be a fun way to test different calibers and rounds! ;D

If ya go to yer mates what kind of crap do ya have to go through? License per species? Quotas / etc?

Comments such as this:

Shows the lefty animal loonies really do have NFI.

There are no quota's on camels, they are a feral species, you only need to make sure you have permission to shoot them on the land your on. (SA and NT other states may be different)
Trouble with camels is they not only eat anything ie all the native flora that the natives use to take shelter in, eat etc, crops that farmers manage to grow out there but they also bust through fences like Obama breaks promises.
Spitting, smelly, horrible animals no wonder the arabs like them.

"There are no quota's on camels, they are a feral species, you only need to make sure you have permission to shoot them on the land your on. (SA and NT other states may be different)"
Does that apply to feral muslims as well ?

you will love this
in short
your only quota is how much ammo you can carry when it comes to ferrel animals here in australia
Illegal to shoot Native animals with out permits / tags.
the funny thing is once you go through all the BS here to get your guns once you have it we have some of the best hunting / shooting here in the world
here in SA you only need a general hunting permit only about $25 this dose not cover ducks though ( more issues and a test with a season and limits ) there is different hunting permits from state to state though
also need permission from the land owners
and away you go.....
-

don't worry we have asked ;D

It bloody well should! >:(
Could think of a few more feral species that deserve a one way trip in a hercules transport to the middle of the alantic.

Sounds like fun! Land is what I am lacking to shoot on. :(

I for one, see a drtv road trip in the making.Bolt action only I suppose, but not a hardship. Can international hunters bring Aussie legal guns in with them? Do they have to bring them home (this would be the bribe for you and your mate)? After all, its hot as hell here and cool where you are. I think a bit of low cost redneck camel shooting would have a few takers.

Yes you can, you need to advise first and fill out a bit of paperwork, but you surely can. Not sure how you would go about leaving them behind, I suppose it could be done easily enough through a dealer and then passed on.
Just make sure you bring over some 25/50rnd ruger 10/22 steel lipped mags with ya, philw wont need them but I know some one that could make use of them ;D
PS its not exactly cool in the outback!

Might I suggest.....

Gday all,
they are my pics that Phil has posted, the young bloke is my 3 year old.......... :)
as phil has said it is pretty isolated out here with the nearest Major town nearly 300 miles away,so trapping the horses and the like is a bit of a logistical nightmare.if you have Google Earth/Maps check out Newman Western Australia.
I use a Winchester Mod 70 in 7mmRem Mag with 160gr woodleigh Protected points at 2900fps and it does the job admirably i can tell you......... ;)
cheers

Its been 20 years since I dated an Aussie, and I still wish I'd taken her up on her offer and followed her back to Canberra. Sad but true. I let an ROTC contract stand in the way. Two decades and many women later I still say once you go Aussie, you'll accept no substitutes. :-\

Sounds like more law abiding Aussie's are getting a little fed up with the "gov't" dictating what's best for the citizenry regarding firearms ownership.
Time to tell them, and our lame ass anti gun contingent as well, to MTFU.
The English have gone over the edge, most of Europe as well. There are non stop attempts to get the mandatory rifles OUT of Swiss homes.

Go get those camels,.. wish I could bring my Mauser over, if a 30-30 to the head works, I have one also...
We have some controlled Buffalo farms, and the meat is excellent. Never tried camel though, little BBQ sauce and steaks, perhaps a good Aussie beer, sounds like a great time.

Seems to me if they don't belong, they are feral and they are hurting native species, the order of the day should be blast away. It's a job that's just too big to handle.
We are having major problems with feral hogs in Texas. The population is too large and they breed too fast. Control efforts are failing. Here is some of todays news on the subject:
Monday, August 10, 2009
Wilbur from Charlotte’s Web they are not.
Texas’ feral hogs can be rabid predators, and they are carving paths of destruction across much of the state. Central Texas is not immune.
With an estimated population of 3 to 4 million in Texas, feral hogs mow down crops and kill deer fawns and goat kids. They are even known to attack people.
A feral hog runs across desert scrub on a ranch near Mertzon, southwest of San Angelo. The hogs are prolific breeders, and female hogs can give birth to as many as 13 offspring in a single litter. (Eric Gay photo / Associated Press, file)

Kyle Lange searches for feral hogs by helicopter Feb. 18 near Mertzon, Texas. Feral hogs are a problem for farmers and ranchers statewide as they eat or damage crops, root up pastures and even attack other animals or people. (Eric Gay photo / Associated Press, file)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Feral hogs are a problem in just about every county in the state,” said Texas Farm Bureau spokesman Gene Hall. “Those things can do more damage than a bulldozer.”
