Haven't we talked about the need for knowing basic skills and not trusting your life to technology?

Couple stranded in snow for 3 days
after navigation system sends them
down remote forest road

By JEFF BARNARD , Associated Press

GRANTS PASS, Ore. - A Nevada couple
traveling through Eastern Oregon are safe at
home after spending three days stuck in
snow because their SUV's navigation system
sent them down a remote forest road.

Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger says
after John Rhodes and his wife, Starry Bush-
Rhodes, got stuck on Christmas day,
atmospheric conditions apparently changed
enough for their cell phone to get a weak
signal and relay GPS coordinates to a Klamath
County dispatcher.

The couple were rescued Sunday afternoon
when a deputy reached them and winched
their vehicle out of the snow.

Evinger says they are now home safe in Reno.

I'd be dead be for I told a dispatcher that my GPS got me lost.  Keep a compass in the car and monitor how long and how fast you driving.  They're not 'safe' at home, they're just home.  Those jack asses'll never be safe any where.

I don't own one of these things but my kid bought one.  They have to be set correctly in order to recognize where you are in the first place, you can't just plug them in and play.  She plugged it in and it said she was in Kansas....I had to reprogram the thing for her before she could get out of our neighborhood.

We use a GPS when traveling in big cities.. We have named her Jill.
Jill is partial to Marshal..He doesn't cuss her and call her vile names like I do..  ;D
I swear... the Garmin companys are in cahoots with the gas company's cause they invariably take you the longest route IF they can.  Usually common sense will tell you otherwise and you can reroute a little yourself if you have the vicinity of where you should be... AND~~If you have any common sense. when you drive..  ::)* DON"T get me started on THAT!! Or everyone will actually know what my full opinion of Marshals driving is.. **There is a reason I do most of the driving..**

1~~Its quieter in the truck cause I'm not yapping at him like  a Chihuahua nipping at his heels .
2..I drive better and have better directional skills.
3.. we actually get there without threat of death ( basically His)
4.. its way too hard for me to drive when I sit in the passengers seat..  ;D

So There! :P

I like that one.   :D

Things like car navigation systems, and Mapquest are for people who are anal about folded maps but don't want to be bothered doing it right.
The most passing glance at a map will usually show you the most direct route to somewhere, then just refold the map so that section is showing and to hell with the factory creases,
Someplace like the Bay area or LA a "Thomas Guide" is worth it's weight in gold, it lists and shows EVERY street in the area it covers.
I think people who can not handle a road map DESERVE to be lost.

I love the ease of the GPS that came with our car. It is very convenient, especially in unfamiliar cities. That said, we also keep a US travel atlas and a state map in our car. When we travel out of state, we stop for a map of the state that is our final destination (more detailed than our atlas).

When we lived in Colorado we always kept a cold weather emergency survival kit in our cars.

Technology is great, but it cannot replace common sense and a little preparedness.

Just crossed my mind that people NEVER learn about the importance of working out directions for them selves.
Columbus had some ones map of the route to China and look where HE ended up  ;D
