Season 2: Episode 1: Home Invasion
« on: December 30, 2009, 08:24:32 AM »
Episode 1:       “Who’s At The Door?”
It happens every day.  You’re at home watching television, cleaning up or just reading a book.
There’s a knock at your door.  It would seem the most logical thing to do would be to just open the door. Unfortunately, that may be the biggest mistake of your life.
Once again, this season of The Best Defense begins at home by teaching you how to deal with a home invasion when you are caught away from your safe room or don’t have one. More importantly, we’ll show you how to put that knowledge into practice by teaching you “training in context”—secrets of replicating the situations you fear most through practical drills at the range.

Some of you are probably aware of the story I told a few months ago about my friend who's family was subjected to a violent home invasion just a few miles from where we taped this episode. It happen about a month after we taped.

While we covered this topic in Season 1, we all felt that the feedback we received gave us the opportunity to revisit the topic in Season 2 and go into more detail and hit some additional information. This is the first of several shows on the topic in this season's line up!

It happened here in Laconia the other night, guy answered a knock at the door and 4 people in ski masks (3 men and a woman ) commenced to pummel him. Police are looking for information but believe the attackers are people the victim knows.

What a great episode! Every segment was just what I wanted to see. I'm ready to buy the DVD now. I like the idea of each episode convering some portion of conceal carry. Janich looked like he toned up a bit (was he getting ready for the future fight scenes with Rob?).

Guys
My wife and I just finished watching episode#1 of the Best Defense. My wife commented on how the show opened her eyes to the possible dangers. Thanks for all the info and we are looking forward to next weeks show.

I love your show and TiVo it via Season Pass. I can’t believe what I heard you say regarding verbal skills to avoid shooting your firearm at a person who has entered your home. Remember he has entered your home.

First you increase the risk of harm to the home owner just by letting the intruder know where you are. Further risk is incurred when you take away the initiative and extend the time of the confrontation by telling them you have a gun and the general direction you are threatening them from. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for saving a life,  but fractions of a second count in these types of confrontations. I know because I have been there three times.

Your solutions fall short given the circumstances you have delineated for us. Your solutions sound more legalese than practical which was a complete surprise hearing it from you guys. You say the best way is to- “avoid lethal force and its aftermath” I say protect my family and the chance for this guy to get away with it again and again. How is that helping my community or my neighbor. Yes crime is ugly, but to scare or blame the home owner for not firing and characterizing it as  “the best way” is foolish and moreover-dangerous.

Why should the intruder be given any chance to harm you or your family once they have entered your home? Why would you teach such a notion. I was always taught to “sandwich” criticism so though I’ve been tough on you guys I thank you for your efforts. I can say sincerely that I have taken away some great nuggets of information by watching your show.

Please keep up the good work! As for me and my house, we are more than prepared to clean up the mess and make our family, home and community safer. If the garbage comes into my home it is going to be taken out in a body bag.

Excellent opening to the Second Season. There have been a rash of knock first, then kick in the door thinking no one is home burglaries happening over the past year. The show was right on target. Really enjoyed the open hand technique performed by Michael Janich also.

Thanks, Ping.

Curt,

Circumstances always dictate. In the case of the situation that we actually showed. There was no reason to think that the person could harm me from outside the door (ie- no firearm displayed) and I was both off angle and behind some cover (kneeling behind a book shelf, exterior spiral wrought iron staircase and exterior wall. I was gun in hand, in the ready, on the phone with 911. In that case I would 100% all the time suggest the warning not to "give the bad guy a chance"... to give myself a chance not to need to shoot someone. It is the classic "could vs. should" argument. If I can keep myself, or a student, from NEEDING to use lethal force, I'm going to.

There are a million ways to change the circumstances so that I wouldn't "call out"... in fact, you'll see at least one of them later in the season!

Thanks for watching.

I guess that was worth 50 cents.  ;D

Gave me some things to think about.

30 minutes is too short. Any way to increase it to an hour? You know, just to make sure I get my moneys worth.  ;)

I didn't see you fumbling with the safe. Biometric?

Yep. I have both types... you'll see the push button Gunvault later in the season.
