I voted for the xd but I would choose neither as a backup. I would choose a revolver, I want a gun thats fool proof and will go bang. One that wont foul, drop a mag or break . 8)

Only one for me would be the Glock, just plain versatility out ways the Pro/Con area. 357sig change barrel to 40s&w change barrel and magazine to 9mm. Just my 2cents.

Really, for me, the backup would be the same type of gun as the full size gun and carried off body or be a Jframe in the offside front pocket.

After reading this thread yesterday and today and after thinking it over...............I voted for the SIG..................... SHOCKER, I know.

I already have 2 Glocks, and they each serve their roles. One as a nightstand gun and the other as a carry gun. So, if I personally were to make a choice it would be for the SIG just to have as a range/fondle gun. I personally dont care for the XDs, and I have no interest in M&P since I am a "Glock fan boy" (Shout out - Michael Bane) and can not wrap my tiny little brain around ever buyer any polymer service pistol other then Glock.

*M&P would be my choice for a polymer pistol if those Glocks didnt just oozing "Perfection" ;)

I will say this...If you are wanting to go compact, the M&P is the way to go.  I held and fired a lot of popular .40 compacts on the market (Glock 23&27, M&P Compact, XD Compact, Walther PPS, and even the new Springfield EMP in 40).  and for my hand at least, the M&P was the most comfortable and usable.  The finger grip extension is a must, but once in hand you really dont even notice that it is a compact.  It feels like a full size gun.

I think there should be a forum just for M&Ps here just to balance out all of the "Free Love" for Glock. Just kidding yall know I don't hate Glocks... I just think the M&P is the future that Glock is just now coming to align in their own products. And you have to give S&W credit for operating in enemy territory... I mean MA.

I think that S&W beat a dead horse (Sigma) for a long time trying to compete with Glock and finally came out with a real competitor. Glock isn't necessarily following Smith here. Many other makers have ben offering pistols with interchangeable grip panels. Police departments want that interchangeability now and Glock is giving it to them. I'm sure some civilian and military users are going to benefit from them as well. I do like Glocks, but I think that M&Ps and XD's are finally getting there as well. At our range, nothing holds up like Glocks still. M&Ps and XD's are always needing broken parts repaired. Strangely, in the XDs that is sen more in the 9's and 40's, rather than the 45. Maybe because of higher pressures in the smaller calibers.

In reference to the comment about Glock not following the M&P all I have to say is that on the whole more law enforcement departments are switching from Glocks to M&Ps not the other way around. And these are not small departments. It's a developing trend that there is a strong demand for AMERICAN made and owned product that PERFORMS as promised. And I haven't seen M&Ps breaking in any quantity. The only mechanical problems I've seen reported online or from S&W is the mag catch which was only on first release compacts and fullsize. I sent mine because I could have something changed to more of my suiting for free, not because it failed. And from the real world torture tests that have been provided from firearm trainers in regards to round count it's performing above expectation. 63,000 rounds before a "crack developed in the slide" that the engineers at S&W declared safe to fire. Pretty impressive for the new kid on the block.
