Double Action 1911- Never Saw One Before!
« on: January 07, 2010, 11:52:27 AM »
I was at open pistol night at my range last night as asst. range master...saw someone shooting a double action 1911...I didn't even know such a thing existed. I didn't have a chance to check it out, but I know the guy has all kinds of odd old pistols.
Anyone know what it might have been?

Para Ordnance LDA is the only DA 1911 that I know of. I have a friend who carries one.

If it's double action, is it still a 1911?  It's like when I go to a restaurant and they have a "martini menu," and there's not one damn martini on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Putting it in a big-ass martini glass doesn't make it a martini!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sorry, ran out of my meds.

Para LDA.....Colt Double Eagle...those are all I can think of. Even then the Double Eagle looks fairly different than a real 1911.

Why didn't they catch on? Just aesthetics or something more? I would think for you rust bucket guys it would be ideal for carry, the same platform you're used to with the speed/ simplicity of Da or Da/Sa? Why aren't they popular?

Obviously you have never shot a 1911. Its speed and simplicity are way above any DAO pistol. You cant improve on perfection. ;D

I've shot them, though I've spent a lot more time with a Hi-power, but still the same idea. Jerking it out of concealmeant as opposed to a duty holster or at the range it just seems Da/Sa would have advantages. I'm obviously a Phillistine on this subject, just honestly curious. I mean there is every conceivable type of 1911 out there, I'm surprised this didn't get more traction.

Para seems to be doing OK with it  ;D
In truth though no double action can give as good a trigger as a 1911 carried cocked and locked.

Yes, there was a DA conversion to the 1911 a while back.  I'm thinking it was done by Seecamp but my memory isn't what it once was.  I never had a chance to shoot one but from what I remember of the reviews it wasn't that good/smooth action.  Maybe MB can chime in or maybe another OTLM (Old Timer Like Me).

The Para LDA isn't truly a double action.  It just has a longer trigger pull and the hammer has to move through its full cycle when the trigger is pulled.  No second strike capability.  The slide still has to be racked before pulling the trigger will make it go bang.  At one point I thought they were kind of cool, but I got better.   :)
