SKS with detachable mag vs AK
« on: January 17, 2010, 12:02:25 PM »
I'm not really in the market for either (though always open to a good deal), but a classified post got me to wondering. The question is this. For a short range hunting rifle and general SHTF weapon, which gets the nod? A Chinese SKS or an Eastern European AK? Lets assume max range is 250 yards, most shots inside of 150 yards. If you could have one, which would you choose and why?

There is no differance in convenience or performance between the 2. Both are monkey simple, the only advantadge to the SKS would be if it had the fixed magazine then you would not have to worry about losing or damaging magazines. with the detachable magazine version you have a longer barrel, therefore less compact with no noticeable benefit, and magazines that are less common than standard AK mags.
My vote would be for the AK.

I have owned both, still have the SKS, IT SHOOTS TIGHTER THAN THE AK, NOT MUCH BUT NOTICEABLE. The longer barrel is a concern in certain situations, but I like mine, the AK has a much better trigger pull. The price of entry was my reason for keeping the SKS, 175.00 back in the day, and it works all the time. With the 75 rd drum, I have had the front handguards smoking. I am still looking for an AK, but not going to get rid of the SKS.

Walker, don't stand in front of it, out to 500 meters. Paper weight, no way. Match gun, no, usable, yes.

I like the sks for short range deer and hog hunts. My sks is a norinco para model, the only thing I've done to it was put a tapco stock and ak74 style muzzle brake. I have nothing bad to say about the sks, its accurate enough and retard simple. With a bit of practice loading with stripper clips is cake.

LUCKY!  I haven't seen to many SKS's with that short a barrel.  The Tapco furniture is nice to.  Lightens up the gun, and I like the way they carry and hold wearing the TAPCO.

It's nice (& rare) to see two SKS's in a row that haven't been junked up with lame scope mounts, lasers, flashlights, and all the other ninja junk.

My gun is a working gun not a mall ninja POS. All my gun needs is a good sling and plenty of loaded clips.

Norinco didn't import a whole lot of the "Paratrooper" model with the 16 inch barrel, but I have seen a couple on GunBroker around $500.
I always wondered if the shorter barrel effected the gas flow and messed up the operation.
Any trouble with yours Mauserman ?

Longer barrel? MY AK mag equipped SKS-D (or is mine a -M? I ain't sure of the difference.) has a 16 inch barrel.

I need a stock like tat for it so I can use my drum. Know where I can get one?
