Knife Question.....

I've been thinking about getting a small fixed blade knife to carry every day. Probably the Ka-Bar TDI or something similar. I'd like to carry it in a position where I can reach the knife with either hand, but I'm not sure about carrying it in the middle of the back. Also I woukd probably want to carry it concealed. Now I know first answer out of everyone's keyboard will be "Try it out and see what works best for you" but I would like a couple suggestions for a starting point. So where's a good position to carry one to get to it with either hand?

I just bought a fixed blade that can be warn hanging from a chord around the neck.  I am going to try it at a party tonight.  I have (it is up for sale) a TDI and find it very awkward to present!  From what I understand (Ohio is the home of TDI), it is meant to be warn on the off side so that it can be used in case of an attempted snatch of your strong side weapon and would be very difficult to present with either hand.  Keep us posted.

The problem with middle of the back carry is if you fall on it you risk injury to your spine, whether it is during an attempted assault of some sort or even something as mundane as slipping on a wet floor or icy sidewalk.
I would do like Ellis and try out the ones on the neck cord.

The 'L' shape of the TDI makes carry unusual.  Many police carry it in front of the offside hip (above the front pocket), behind some of their belt gear, in crossdraw style.  I've carried mine where I'd normally carry a pistol, behind my strong side hip.  Either mode can be drawn with either hand, but the front carry is easier for both hands.

Just know the company has had problems in the past.  I haven't heard anything recently bad, so their current ownership may be ... better.  That said, I have 3 of them, some custom, some production.  The difference between HAK and other finger hole knives that have come out since  is that the HAK comes in different sizes to fit your fingers.

As for the the ambi deploy, small but usable along with being concealable, I will recommend the "HawgTooth" neck knife. http://www.hogtoothknives.com/ 

I have owned the older model PDK154 ORIGINAL  which is sans the pinky ring and has the talon blade. The little knife has a ton of cutting power when slashing and are very well made with. One negative is the order time takes a few weeks, but that is a small mark in the con column.

Tried out the neck knife at a party...worked well.  Easy to get to .  No one knew it was there.  Shifted around a little but not enough to be a problem.

While we are talking knives here, I have some questions for those who might have experience in knife fighting.

I have garnered a bit of information from Bill Bagwell's various writings that a fighting blade needs to be 10"+ to allow penetration to vital organs. 

I have a lot of faith in what Mr. Bagwell says.  He has been an instructor for US Army Special Forces and designed and made what some consider the best fighting Bowie knife, his Hell's Bells line.

In my own limited experience, I did not find a long blade to fit my novice and desperate style...I didn't want to get anywhere near close enough to the guy coming at me with his knife to make a penetrating strike.  Instead I found it much safer and easier to fight his knife hand and get a good slash on it which ended the fight...on two occasions.

I was carrying the big Buck clip point folder at that time.

Since I have gotten a CCW, I haven't paid much attention to carrying a knife for defense.

A good knife (or two) is always useful to carry where legal...along with you CCW weapon (or two) so the experts say!
