I would like to retell an incident with the Census about thirty years ago. My wife and I owned a commercial building
in a small NW pa town. She had a business downstairs and we lived in an small apartment upstairs. There was another
apartment, which was vacant.
We got two forms to fill out. One was a short form, and the other was very long and involved. I filled out the short form and sent it in. About 2 to 4 weeks after, a census taker appeared at the door and wanted to know why the other form had not been filled out. I told them that no one was residing in the other apartment( the tenant had passed away several months ago) and it was vacant. They said they neded the information, I refused and said I already had filled out one form.
Thsi went on for several weeks, until a Supervisor came and tried to coerce me into giving the required information.
I think the detailed information had to do with the physical facilities of the vacant apartment and the building. I replied that anything they needed was at the County Courthouse.
They finally gave up, no repercussions that I know of.
