.22 Mag Ammo designed for pistol use
« on: February 26, 2010, 02:28:12 PM »
I have wondered why no ammo company does not make a .22 mag that is designed for pistols with short barrels. The mag does not offer much more in a barrel shorter than 8" over a LR. Not that the Mag is great for SD but for a backup or in a pinch it could only help. Many carry the NAA in .22 mag and Kel-Tec is PMR-30 is going to be out soon. If it had a faster burn rate it would really zip it up in a short barrel pistol.

no market for it.  There are only a handful of handguns out there that can shoot a 22 mag.  the 22 mag is basicly a pest destruction round.

The original threat level 1 body armor could be penetrated by .22 mag from a high standard derringer, but not by a 9mm. Ergo the upper threat levels were produced. Not my choice, but the old High standard had something going for it. Not a manstopper per say, but nobody likes leaking blood, no matter what size orifice.

a arrow with a broad head will go right thru soft armor too, but its not something I want to carry around.  If I was really worried about body armor, I'd carry a 1911 in 9x25 dillon   ;D

The LR and the .17 HMR have really overshadowed the .22 Mag but there are still many users that have them in Revolvers and derringers and a few in auto. I guess we can all switch to the 5.7x28mm if we need a more zippy small caliber. ;)

That's where I am...for home protection.  Five Seven and sometimes a PS 90 backed up by a double barrel in the closet.  My primary concern with defense is to make certain I don't harm one of my children...so I like the 5.7 for it's ability to disintegrate and bleed off energy more quickly than the 9MM, 40, 45 or others.  I am of the opinion that more shots on the target is better and the 5.7 fits that description.

OK...off topic...my bad.

Probably because it winds up at excessive pressures ? Or doesn't perform well ?

That New Kel-Tec PMR30 looks interesting. You don't think it would be a good racoon gun for shorter distances??

Let's broaden this a bit: is there .22lr ammo designed for pistols?  Is there 9mm,.40S&W, or .45ACP ammo designed for carbines?  You'd think they could have a faster (than normal) burning powder for the pistols, and slower for the carbines.  I assume that if there's a huge plume of flame when you fire your gun that the powder is burning too slowly. (e.g. .30 carbine in a pistol)
