Home invader shoots, kills homeowner, after giving him everything he wanted

PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- Detectives are investigating a deadly home invasion at a South Florida home.

"I saw a lot of lights flashing and I immediately said, something's going on here," said Byron Adino, who lives nearby.

Police said around 12:34 Tuesday morning, an intruder stormed into the home along Northwest Sixth Court and 75th Terrace and tied up and robbed the couple inside. "I heard some shots," said Adino.

Neighbors said even though the husband cooperated with the intruder and handed over valuables, he was shot dead. "Why did they kill him? She said they gave them everything that they have. So, why did he kill him," said Adino, baffled.
The 46-year-old man was a professor at Nova Southeastern University. The couple's five-year-old child was sleeping in another room when the incident occurred.

Investigators said the robbers then set the home on fire, before fleeing the scene. A gas can was recovered outside the front of the home. When fire fighters arrived on scene to extinguish the blaze, they discovered the victims inside the home. "We did, upon searching the house, find a victim who was deceased on the back patio," said Plantation Fire Battalion Chief Joel Gordon, "and there was also a woman and a small child who both escaped without injury."

Like other residents, Adino is concerned about his safety. "I'm in shock, because I'm right across the street. I'm wondering am I going to be next or what," he said.

There is no word yet on whether this was a targeted incident.

Yep, 15-20 minutes south of me. The Professor, was a renowned cancer researcher also, and this was a "good" neighborhood.

  It solidified my position, again, about locking doors, and keeping certain "items" very close, even in my own house, when most are supposed to be relaxing after their day.  It just can happen anytime to anyone.

My wife thinks I have a paranoid state of mind. I prefer to let her yell at me, after the Coroner gets the body out of my house.

Very sad. Especially, the maliciousness of the shooting and setting fire to the house, after getting whatever he could carry out.

This is a very dangerous scumbag, and he's still out there.

" They might kill you anyway "  You bet they might. I have never  understood the stance, give them what they want and they will leave you alone. You are trusting you and your families life on the belief that someone who has made the decision to rob, carjack, or burgle you, will do the ( Right? ) thing and just leave.  Sounds like pretzel logic to me.

I surely won't try to comment on the victim, I am sure he did what he thought was best, and probably did not have a choice, the mother and child, did the bad guy spare them, or try to add insult to injury by burning the house down with them in it? Very bad deal and my prayers to the survivors.

I think it's an issue of people thinking or wishing to think that criminals are just like "they are" and can be reasoned with.  It might work with some kids...but with a VCA it confirms weakness.

I live in a "nice area" but we are not immune to organized gangs or street thugs.  They are known to kill someone as part of initiation or to prove themselves.  The robbery portion is just gravy to them, they just want the kill added to their resume.  As it has been said on this forum, the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
It is a shame, a few epsiodes of the TBD could have created the awareness needed and the inspiration to prepare for the worst, which unfortunately came to this poor family.

This is a little eerie.....the wife and I just had this conversation in the truck yesterday. We were discussing carjacking and robberies and such. The main point of the discussion was to never think that they just want money and/or the vehicle.

Great point Tom.  They are probably blaming guns for the death rather than the criminal.  Being PO is not my thing, not only do I blame the criminal rather than the weapon, I blame the family (or lack thereof) of the criminal as well for contributing to their lack of morals or conscience.

I hate to think like a democrat, but you shouldn't let this crisis go to waste.  Use it as a learning tool in your attempt to educate your  spouse.
