No, I don't believe they knew the elimination test. One of the other teammates was talking about how the only thing the kid brought to the team was long range skills and nothing else. He thought the kids lack of maturity and rifle only skills was a weakness and for the sake of the team they should work to get the kid off the team.
I think Mike went after the kid because he wanted to shoot against the best, regardless of their specific shooting discipline. The kid was a long range shooting champion. I think other than Mike, he was the most accomplished competition shooter on the team. I remember Mike telling other team members to pick the kid so Mike could go against him.
It was definitely a gamble. If Mike had won, no one on the team would want to challenge him for the rest of the show and he would be the red team leader. He would almost be assured to go very deep into the competition, even when his team lost the challenge because no one would want to go up against him. They would look for an easier elimination challenge. It was a good strategy if it worked, but it was definitely a gamble...and it ended up costing him.
