Battery powered TVs for Storms. Help.
« on: June 17, 2010, 09:55:22 PM »
Its getting into hurricane season here in the iguana lattitudes. I used to have this silly Jeep brand  battery powered TV/radio (which also included a "flaslight" and emergency siren ::)). It sounds absurd, but it wasn't. I rode  out three storms with that thing keeping me connected to the outside world. It ran on D cells. I had to pitch it when the shift to HD happened. >:(

Now all I can find are rechargable flat screens with a one hour battery life. ::) Please, if I thought the power would be back on in an hour I wouldn't need the damn thing.
Does anyone know of a battery powered TV and where I might find one? I have looked high and low and am having no luck. Radio will do, but the TV is a plus.
Thanks

Thanks, but I have the radios. What I want is the TV. Just so I can watch our local media jackals get blown around like balloons while demonstrating that going outside in one hundred mile an hour winds is a bad idea. ;D

Amazon seems to have a pretty good selection of battery powered televisions.  The ones I saw, on the first page, ranged from around $70-100.  Hope that helps.

It's bike week. Not that I don't appreciate your help. Still, if you are talking to me, rather than convincing a 22 year old "model" that you are just the guy to make her the hit of DRTV if she believes in guns and bikes (and no lie, she would be), you are too damn old. Tell no lies, deliver what you promise, and strike while the iron is hot. ;) Stop posting, start partying, and give us a range report when its over.

You might want to look at generators.  If I could swing it, I'd put in a large 10KW natural gas generator that would run the whole house off the city gas line.

Since I cannot do that, and even if I could, I'd get a portable generator.   Since I don't want to mess with gasoline and it's deterioration and gum up problems, I would go for an LP generator similar in size to the portable gasoline generators.

They run outside, are not as noisy and the fumes aren't as dangerous as gasoline.  The LP tanks will do double duty in your gas grill, if, heaven forbid, you have forsaken the flavor of charcoal for the easy life of indoor cooking on an outdoor grill.

Run your TV and radio and maybe a few lights.  Get two and run your computer and toaster oven too.  Or maybe your refrigerator.

Do you have a laptop? if so by a TV tuner, a fully charged laptop will last a few hours

Solus Wrote " I would go for an LP generator similar in size to the portable gasoline generators." .....OK Solus you're now my expert on Generators  ;).

I've been thinking about getting one to run my well should the power go down and, as I have several Propane cylinders was thinking about trying to run one on that, is LP the same?, the Propane sure seems to burn smokey & 'wet' when under a kitchen pan, will this screw up a generator?
