Mental block when TRYING to run

I realize that this HAS to be some sort of psychosematic hold over from when I was fat, but for some reason I'm struggling to start running.  Generally, I avoid it.  I mean I carry a .45 so I don't have to run, but there is this duatholon in two months (biking/running) that I would like to take part of.  I can ride my bike all day long with no problem, but if I try to run I'm done after about .03 of a mile.  The contest requires 1.1 to 1.5 k of running and 3.5 k of biking (It's at our local ski mountain.)

I can't seam to convince myself I can do it.  I don't seam to have problem if I'm playing basketball or soccer.

ANY advice would be helpful

Motivation is one of the hardest things to come by when losing weight. For me, it's actually getting on the bike, which I love doing.

Go your .03 mile. Stop. Do not look back, do not turn around.
Do another .03. Stop. Do not look back, do not turn around.
Run another .03. Etc.

Keep doing that until you are 1.5 km from home. Then do it all the way back.

I can't help you with this, I'm the same way, I'll walk forever, but I won't run from a mad dog, I'd rather get bit than run.
(Of course I've never had those rabies shots either, that might change my mind !  )

It is definitely a mental thing. I'm in the same situation . I want to get back in the gym. I have a lot of time on my hands and I've lost around  80 pounds. I want to lose another 20 or 30 pounds. I cant get motivated enough to go back to the gym. I don't understand it either?

Get a big fat ugly one and have her run behind you!        :P

Not sure what you mean when you say you are "done" after 0.03 miles  Bored?  Pain somewhere?  Or just sucking wind?  Are you running as hard as you can or doing a more leisure pace?  A flat out sprint will wipe you out pretty fast.  The common wisdom is you want a pace that you can still (barely) carry on a conversation.

And then there is always the possibility of checking with people that actually do it for real.   :P

kind of a combinationof all three.  It's weird after I tried running I rode my bike for 15 miles full bore

Just make sure you duct tape a corndog to your butt or the fat one behind won't have any motivation either.  ;D
