So today I took the new 10/22 Target out to the range. No modifications other than putting a 4-12x40AO Simmons Air on it.
I had three brands of ammo. CCI Standard (lead), Eley Sport (lead) and Fed Copper Plated HP. The rifle functioned flawlessly. One Eley round did catch on the lip and bend, but I attribute that to the ammo. From the targets Eley did not meet up to expectations. I suspect the "sport" line is a lower cost/quality line.
Ammo made a huge difference. As you can see from the targets, I shot to 1/2" - 5 shot consecutive groups a 50yds with CCI Standards !!! Now that's what I'm talkin' about. I was literally holding my breath on the second five shots. I couldn't believe how good it shoots. A far cry from the original 10/22s. The Eley and the Federal just didin't hack it at least in this gun. I traded a beautiful Savage MKII Target w/ thumbhole stock for this 10/22 because I couldn't get the Savage to shoot anywhere near this good.
Now I wonder how she'll shoot if I relieve the stock a little so the barrel is truely freefloating? Or do I leave well enough alone?
And while I was there I broke in my new AR Lower with my ER Shaw bull barrel. Not exactly what I wanted but the trigger is stock and needs upgrading. And this was standard PMC 55gr ammo. A little work to do yet.
