10/22 Target Range Report
« on: July 30, 2010, 10:32:50 PM »
So today I took the new 10/22 Target out to the range.  No modifications other than putting a 4-12x40AO Simmons Air on it.

I had three brands of ammo.   CCI Standard (lead), Eley Sport (lead) and Fed Copper Plated HP.  The rifle functioned flawlessly.  One Eley round did catch on the lip and bend, but I attribute that to the ammo.   From the targets Eley did not meet up to expectations.  I suspect the "sport" line is a lower cost/quality line.

Ammo made a huge difference.    As you can see from the targets, I shot to 1/2" - 5 shot consecutive groups a 50yds with CCI Standards !!!   Now that's what I'm talkin' about.  I was literally holding my breath on the second five shots.  I couldn't believe how good it shoots.  A far cry from the original 10/22s.    The Eley and the Federal just didin't hack it at least in this gun.   I traded a beautiful Savage MKII Target w/ thumbhole stock for this 10/22 because I couldn't get the Savage to shoot anywhere near this good.

Now I wonder how she'll shoot if I relieve the stock a little so the barrel is truely freefloating?  Or do I leave well enough alone?

And while I was there I broke in my new AR Lower with my ER Shaw bull barrel.  Not exactly what I wanted but the trigger is stock and needs upgrading.  And this was standard PMC 55gr ammo.   A little work to do yet.

Will work for ammo

Stick with the CCI ammo, Eley ammo is overrated, Fed ammo, is hot barrel plinking fodder,...

As I posted, everyone has to have a 10/22. ;D

looks like the AR is combat accurate, probably shoot as well with other ammo. I get great results in my Sig556 with the PMC stuff, and it looks like it won't need much work.

Thanks for the range report. Looks like your right on target.

Alf, even I have never been drunk/stoned enough to mess with that 10/22 with the CCIs. All but one in the black at 50 yards? What more do you want unless you are looking at the Olympics? Seriously, leave it alone and thank God that you have a rifle that accurate.
In the same vien, I would call your AR more than good enough. You put nine out of ten in the bad guy, and the one miss seems like an issue of breath control as it deviated vertically. You killed him nine times out of ten and caused him to get right with God once. ;D The Quakers view? Good enough. Just my .02.

Good shooting.
I've always got the best accuracy in all my .22 guns from CCI ammo.

CCI all the way alf, might have to try that ammo in my charger see what sort of groups I can get.
Mind you it shoots pretty ordinary  ;)

Great group, Sledge.   (That's around 0.6" for those metrically challenaged)    Of course the charger has less barrel to vibrate and while it may loose just a little velocity, it should shoot very well.

I was totally surprised by the variance in ammo.   I could understand grouping higher or lower, but the Eley disappointed me.    The .22lr isn't all that accurate a round anyway, but after firing the CCI, I would have suspected the Federal stuff would have done better.

Lower velocity CCI's will group better because they suffer less buffeting from approaching the speed of sound and the associated shock wave.

Nice grouping with the CCI's. I shot my 10/22 (.920 barrel, target stock, trigger job, 2-7x BSA scope) with the Eley Sport at 50 yds outside and had very good groups with them. I wonder if you got a bad lot of ammo?

When I initially tested ammo I tried about 8 different kinds and ended up using win power points. Even with the occasional flyer the seemed to perform better than even the RWS target ammo that cost 3-4 times as much, whod a thunk it. Even with the mark three I found the variance astounding.
BTW when do we get a pic of the rifle?  ;D
