Anybody with experience on XDm 9's?
« on: August 27, 2010, 06:18:00 PM »
I just picked up a XDm9 in a trade and being a 20+ year almost daily Glock carrier I didn't really want to like it. I figured I'd end up trading it pretty quickly. The funny thing is I went and shot it today and I have to admit I really like it. I still don't see a need for the grip safety, kind of redundant and makes it a bit uglier but the thing shoots. I can't believe I'm saying this but out of the box stock to stock this thing is a much better shooter than a stock Glock 17. It won't touch any of my Glocks I've done work to but that's comparing apples to apple pie. I would like to change the sights (although that at least seem to be metal) and I hear that can be a real challenge, I don't love the fact that mags are $30 and it doesn't fit into any holster I own so I'll be needing to order another Serpa at the very least and maybe some leather if it keeps growing on me.

My biggest issue is the trigger, better than a stock Glock trigger but nothing like my modified Glocks. Does anyone have any experience with any of the aftermarket trigger options (not even sure how many there are at this point) for it? Is the trigger in the XDm different than the older XD? I'm not so concerned about the pull weight which was just a hair under 5# on my Timney scale which is more than acceptable for a stock trigger on a carry/duty pistol. I'd just like to clean it up a bit, mostly the creep. I haven't even pulled the slide off to clean it yet, are the internals anything like a Glock where I can polish some contact points to smooth it out? Are there any shorter disconnectors available for it? Thanks in advance for any help.

Check on the XD forum.  They have the experience you seek.

Thanks for the input, I didn't even know there was an XD forum. It looks like 3 main companies make trigger kits and it costs about 4 times what it does to do a trigger on a Glock.

I went w/ Springer Precision for my XD trigger job, and was extremely pleased. Why Springer? No drilling for one, trigger bar is machined from a solid piece of stainless (no bends to weaken the bar and possibly break),  I've seen nothing but good comments on them and they are extremely easy to deal with. I'm sending them my XDm 45 in the near future for a trigger job, and you can have them deactivate the auto take down for free if you want. the parts for it ride damn near the trigger bar and just seem to be another place to collect debris, possibly effecting the trigger pull. That feature of the XDm is nice, but unnecessary. I don't have an issue w/ pulling the trigger manually on my XD, and that auto take down on the XDm does the same thing, but automatically when you bring the slide forward after rotating the take down lever.

I also had them install these Tritium TruGlo Sights(best price I found on the web) and will do the same on my XDm. Love these sights, and anyone I've let fire the XD commented on how easily they picked up the front sight.

I really don't know how much of the XD carries over to the XDm.   I have 2 XD Tacticals (one 9 and one 40) and I love them.  New they come with a holster, 2 mags and a mag holster.   Plus last year SA was running a special mail in rebate where they shipped you 2 more mags and another holster...free.

I shot a stock Glock last week at the range and I can't tell a whole lot of difference trigger-wise.

The XD and the XDm both have VERY tightly seated sights.   I got the B&J tool and have put Williams FOs on both of mine, which I love.

A lot carries over. Look at an m as a tuned XD.  Internals are the same w/ the exception of the auto take down and a one piece guide rod.

Sights are very tight, that's why I let Springer do the work - cheaper than buying the tool.

Unfortunately the holster doesn't do me any good since I'm a lefty. they should let you send it in and swap it out.. ;D I'll pick up a serpa for sure since I'm used to carrying in them and probably some type of IWB rig, maybe I'll finally give a crossbreed a try. I still think they look very bulky but I know people swear by them. With my bad back and hip holsters, especially IWB tend to work either really well or not at all, not much middle ground normally. I did see that cheaper than dirt has mags for $24.97 so I ordered 5 this morning. I also have a B&J sight tool, it does a pretty good job on the XDm? I want to put on XS big dot tritium since that's what all my duty/carry style guns have already. I like staying consistent with my sight picture.

Have a friend that sent his xd45 back to Springfield's pro shop, or whatever they call themselves, and had a trigger job done.  It came back smooth and consistent.

I would recommend this for a carry gun, because you know it will be safe, reliable, and defendable if you get hauled into court for a shooting incident.

Ah, well, "THE" tool was on-sale this month at MidwayUSA for $114.   Given that I'm on my 3rd XD and the local smith charges $45, I've just saved some money  AND I can adjust/replace sights on any of my semi-autos now with ease.

Yeah, makes sense for you. Springer charges me $35 x 2 = $70, so since I have to ship it for the trigger job anyway...

When cash frees up I may buy the tool, but it seems my autos are true at the moment.
