Hey I'm one of those bible clinging, right wing, not quite a militia member who has no desire to shoot anyone accept the person who wants to shoot me! ;D oh, abd I am from the great Republic er State of Texas.

Welcome T.C., your jumping right in, and with this bunch is a good thing. Plus your a Texan. All the better. SBR's should no be a non-issue in TX, but they will be the "civilian" semi-auto version. All the same, DPMS, made a great little guy I adored at the NRA Convention. $1200 bucks thereabouts.,,,, If you are in close quarters, with neighbors, use frangible ammo. Get training and advice from you local folks. Don't rule out a good pistol or shotgun for SD.

Full auto stuff is legal to those that can run with several thousands of dollars for a firearm, like $8000- $12,000 for a FA M16. Plus permits, license, etc,...The "Happy" button costs, and the ATF knows EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE!!!

and yours is the first doors the ATF will kick in if the SHTF. A Remington 11-87 is as fast as your finger, and so is nice AR.

Dittos, and as a former Texan, I would advise against moving anywhere. ;D Seriously though, FA is cool. But they are hard to control, expensive to buy and damn pricy to feed. I mean hell, I can drop 50 bucks on ammo in a very short period of time with my AR. If it were an M-16 I'd`be beyond destitute. Besides, while FA would be a plus in a "Red Dawn" type deal,  in Hillary's "Three in the morning crises" I'm not real sure that "Brrapp, Brrrap" is all that much better than "bang, bang, bang, bang". If you can afford it, I wish you the joy of it, but it really is hard to beat a .45/.357 and a good 12gauge for civilian social work, and they are a whole lot cheaper and a lot less hassel.

PS Welcome! ;D

I most deffinately do not plan on moving! I agree that in this political climate that semi would be a better FA. I was just wondering I didn't know if you could mix and match NFA options. Oh and overthinking is ok as long as you're not making national policy  ::)

Hi T.C.
Welcome to the forum! I own a few Class III items and I hope I can give you some guidance on this stuff. Like some others posted before, check, double-check, and triple-check your state laws in TX before doing anything.

I own a sub machine gun that takes a suppressor: two tax stamps - one for the sub and one for the suppressor. If you want a full-auto SBR, buy a full-auto and that will allow you to have whatever barrel length you want. But it does not work the other way around, i.e. SBR does not upgrade to full-auto. If you go with a FA you only have to pay for one tax stamp. The other way will cost you two stamps. That flexibility is reflected in the prices too.

So....If I was in the market for a full-auto SBR I would use for self defense in the home, I would look at an M16/AR15 conversion (cheaper) and get an upper in the 12" range, plus get a suppressor. That little setup will set you back about 12K, but you'll have one kick-ass setup!

You haven't asked about how to buy them, so I won't get off on trusts and things like that, but feel free to e-mail me if you want info on that too.

Good luck!

Full Auto beat me to it but is totally right. If you can afford a full auto weapon then it can be any barrel length, picture say an MP5 with a 7" barrel if it has a stock it is technically a SBR but if it is full auto it's a single $200 tax stamp for the "machine gun". The same gun in semi-auto is still a $200 tax stamp for a SBR but the difference is a full auto MP5 will cost you 15k or so where a SBR semi-auto MP5 is more like 2k. My new toy is a SBR AR, a Noveske Diplomat with a 7.5" barrel. It was just the cost of the rifle and my  $200 stamp. I'll end up getting another $200 stamp to put a can on it soon. My next toy will be a 12.5" AR platform 308, probably a POF. Once you get started with NFA weapons they become very addictive. Also once you get the first tax stamp after that long wait you'll find your next one(s) come in a lot faster. My last stamp took just a little under three weeks to process including mailing time where the first one took 3 months to get. Don't even bother with your chief LEO if you want to get NFA items, set up a revocable living trust strictly for your NFA items and you don't need LEO approval or fingerprinting. I have one that I've modified for friends that has worked great in FL, MD & TX and I'm sure would work other places as well. A lawyer who understands NFA issues can do one custom to your specific needs for $200-$600.

Thanks FullAuto and bafsu! That was the exact info I was looking for. I didn't quite realize the price of a FA weapon!

You can get some "entry level" full autos for much less, I haven't checked in a few months but some examples would be:  MAC 10/11's or Sten's for around 2.5-3k, maybe even a bit less, Ruger AC556's (the full auto version of the Mini 14) for 3.5-5k, AK's (starting to get pretty scarce though) for 5k. The only full auto I have is a Mac 10 in .45 that my dad bought about 12 years ago for $800. We just recently transfered that to my trust because it just sat in his safe and he didn't want to be bothered with it or have it directly registered to him at his age (a whole different topic, and another big plus for a trust, inheriting a full auto) I know a friend who bought a registered Fleming Sear a while back for around 5k but I think they're more now. This allows you to full auto any HK or clone since the sear is the registered "machine gun" not the weapon. You can, in theory own a HK91/93 an MP5 or any number of weapons that use that trigger pack and interchange the full auto sear (most people just interchange the entire trigger pack) this way you can have multiple full auto weapons with one stamp. You would be advised to SBR anything that would otherwise require it if not full auto though so you'd be within the law if they checked your entire collection at once and the sear wasn't installed into an otherwise fully assembled SBR.
