You have never heard of say a dove tail jig or a circle cutting jig.  Its kind of a wood workers term.  Most machinests would call it a fixture. 


The water/solid sperator deal is mining term.  its basicly a screened box that shakes like crazy.  a jig is any tripple time dance.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

In fact IIRC that chapter in the text book was titled "Jigs and fixtures"
All I can say is "Duh"  (where's the Homer Simpson smilie   ;D  )

But the mining term is still a new one to me, we just call it a strainer, sifter, or sieve.
But there were a lot of terms that were specific to mining, like "muck stick", and "single" or "double jack "

Dad worked in the "Jig and Fixture" dept at GM responsible for designing and development of the fixtures to assist the movement of the body panels from stamping press to stamping press in the total press line.  Some lines, mine for example, had seven or eight presses to develop and form one single part ("B" pillars) from the draw presses.  He hated normal T&D work but the fixture dept kept him occupied.

Only worked on that type of press once, that was at T/C in the 80's  trimming trigger guards to length.
When I was doing Sheet metal we used Amada CNC turret punch presses using various shaped tools to cut out the part with all holes , reliefs and cut outs then formed them separately in the press brakes.
Pem nuts, studs, and other hardware were then pressed into the part as a third operation.
The type of mold making your Dad did is a whole career in its self.
