Not as bad as gasoline, but close. ;D It reminds me of a sad but very funny story. Our first Home Depot was built in this dying mall. They thought Home Depot would anchor it. They were probably right, until the hand of God intervened. Picture the two stupidest people in the world. Both harmless alone, but lethal when combined. The odds of the two meeting are below your odds of winning the powerball. But yet, it happened. One fine day idiot number one shows up in the paint aisle and asks for "non-flammable paint thinner". Who should he ask but idiot number two. Idiot two, a clerk, offers to demonstrate the "non-flammable" properties of mineral spirts by lighting some. :o So much for the store, the mall, and some bystanders. Again, God was clearly in a bad mood that day. How else to explain the one guy who would ask the question meeting the one guy who would demonstrate the fire proof properties of paint thinner. ::) Moral of the story? Clean your bore thoroughly after using the gas/paint thinner before firing it.

First, I'm broke as hell and even I can come up with $70. As far as cosmoline? Well, I wouldn't reccomend it......but, a not so little bird with stripes explained that gasoline does a very quick and effecient job. YMMV. ;D

Before I start this I want you to understand two things"

1.  I have seen the results, and they are nice;
2.  Don't start this unless you have time to finish it in one day!

Take the gun(s) coated in cosmoline down to the local car wash, and blast them clean (be careful not to get over aggressive on the wood), go home and strip them down; spray all small parts with WD40 (water dispersant remember); do a good and complete cleaning; lightly oil; after complete dry time on the wood, detail the stock; reassemble.

Depending on your drive time to and from the car wash (if you don't have a pressure washer of your own or don't want the cosmoline residue on your property) it may not be any faster, but it sure is a lot easier.

That sounds like good (and safe) advice. Question. Does the WD40 get gumy? I tend to lean toward CRC or other silicone products, but the water dispersant thing makes good sense.

TAB:  If you want to take an absolute rusted solid and broken piece in for a gift card, that is up to you.  However, if it is a working firearm, or even a good decorative piece you are just playing into the anti's hands.  They are actually more about the numbers that they get off the streets and the warm fuzzies it generates than they are about the end results ... unless you are talking zero arms.

I will not play into their game of removing firearms from the hands of the general public.  There comes a point where the principle is worth more than the $!  Remember, in their feel good press releases and donation drives even that rusted out piece that resembles an old fence post will be counted as a "deadly assault weapon" and could come back to bite you pro-Second Amendment folk in the hind end.

No.  It isn't on there long enough.  You are only spraying the parts to remove the water and keep corrosion away until you get to the parts in the cleaning process.  It is amazing how fast white and orange can form on small springs and levers!  As soon as you detail the parts they get regular oils and protection.

Whats wrong with making a buck?  would you feel bad if it was a gun was no longer working or was a real POS like a pot metal 25 auto?

Several years back I found a few rifles in the woods right next to a stream.  all of them rusted so badly that the actions would not work.  ( even after a month long soad in deisel they would not budge with out a hammer.)  I turned them in to the LEA.  they kept them for about 6 months then told me to come claim them.  2 of the 3 guns were worth saving, so I gave them to a friend that was learning to smith.  the last one was a 10/22 that was so far gone it was not even funny.  we even broke off the bolt handle trying to get it cleard.  I sold it to a buy back.  Ended up donated the card to a non profit to be auctioned off at  thier end of the year rafle.

Oh yeah, The other 2 guns I gave away, one ended up not being savable, the other was a marlin leaver in 30-30, not only have I shot it, its got about 10 deer to is name .

Believe it or not (I am as surprised as anyone), I'm starting to build an understanding of the inner workings of TAB!.  This is the most recent piece of the mosaic.  I'll not drift and bore folks with it until we have a What Makes TAB Tick thread.  ;D ;D

First, show the quail a little respect and get a side by side, they'll thank you for it. ;) Secondly BUY THE DAMN NAGANT. I am the only one ith a legit excuse not to and thats because I'm left handed. But honestly, out the door for less thn a $100 for a great gun and a piece of history? Why wouldn't you buy one?
FQ13

Because despite being right handed in every possible way, I shoot all my long guns lefty due to left eye dominance.  ;) (winked R eye)
And I've spent too much money already on guns in the last month!

Many moons ago, like when I was about 5, my brother saw me trying to cross my head over the stock of a BB gun. He asked me what the hell I was doing. I explained that I couldn't close my left eye and keep the right one open. He said, "Why don't you shoot left handed?"
So for the last 47 years, long guns come up to my left shoulder.

I shoot handguns right hand, left eye. I can shoot long guns righty but it's a heck of a lot easier with optics.
(I don't have to pick which sight picture to aim with)
