If gold jewelry makes your skin turn green it's because it's really copper. You got ripped off if you thought it was pure gold.

One of the most important features of gold to the ancients, basically the original source of its value was it's purity and any and all forms of corrosion.
Many cultures even believed that eating small amounts of powdered gold would pass these attributes on to people, protecting them from diseases and poisons.
Allergies I don't know about, but if a piece of jewelry turns your skin green it is either as Frank mentioned, brass plated copper, or it has a very low percentage of actual gold in the alloy.

even 24 karart is not pure gold, its 99.9%   For it to be legally sold as pure gold it must be 99.997%  which you never see in jewelry

18k is about 75%  12 is about 50%

Some people react to 24k, others don't.  It can be the same piece of jewelry.   my wife does, she has a neckless she got from her parents, bugs the hell out of  her, she gave it to her sister and she is fine with it.

The acid test ( where the name came from)  is you take a small ammount of shavings from the piece and react it with a acid, if it bubbles its not 24k.

the plated stuff is a completly diffrent animal.

white gold can only be 22k  its about 90% gold and 10% nickel, some people react to the nickle, just like some do with the copper.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

Goldschläger shots for me and my men!  (for medicinal purposes only, of course)

If my wife had a bad reaction to gold, I wouldn't be able to resist asking if litmus paper burst into flames when she touched it.  ;D ;D

Your wife may have an iron deficiency causing the green or dark staining of her skin.

I've never been a fan of yellow gold.

It makes my wife react anyways and it turns green( not that uncommon)  white gold does not.

24kt gold is completely non-reactive.  You've been giving your darling bride the cheap stuff 10kt or 14kt that is mixed with a fair amount of copper--that's where you are getting the reaction.  White gold (the "real" white gold) is mixed with a percentage of nickle, a relatively hard, relatively non-reactive metal.  Be careful about making a purchase of white gold however, as many jewelry companies are simply plating traditional yellow gold (10 or 14kt) with rhodium, and that will wear off in relatively short order and your bride will have that unwanted reaction.  Jared has recently been sued for that practice in the Phoenix area.  I cannot imagine that it's an isolated practice.  If you get yellow gold in 18kt, you should have no problems with reactions (other than thankful appreciation).  Good luck.

As to necklace length, the short length is called a choker and is good for most casual wear.  The longer length is considered more elegant and should be worn with low decolletage.  The mid range (18") is the all-around choice and is suitable for casual and elegant wear.  Good luck, again, and Merry Christmas.

And don't calll us "ladies."

Just another thought or two...  The reason the shops are selling rhodium plated yellow for white is that white gold is much harder to work.  The nickle makes it tougher to cast (requires higher temperatures) and harder to clean-up the castings because the casting marks are tougher to eradicate.  It's also a bit tougher to solder.  And, it's a great deal harder to set stones in white gold because it is harder and less malleable.  Bead-setting small stones is really tough with white gold.

On the bright side of the equation, genuine white gold is an excellent choice for rings and other "high-wear" jewelry just because it is so darned tough.  It will outwear yellow gold nearly two-to-one.

I'm gonna agree with the Rabbit...

24K Gold is WAY too soft for fine jewelry.

Gold jewelry in the 10 and 14K variety is "Sears and Roebuck" gold where as 18K is much more elegant and used in higher end jewelry.  I'm lucky in the jewelry department, my lovely bride prefers Silver and birthstones, she traded in her engagement ring, a cheap Kay's 1/4carat diamond for something she really liked!

I've never bought her another diamond and probably never will.  She doesn't even wear her 18K gold wedding ring.  She wears her mothers white gold set.   Good white gold is 90% gold and 10% nickel.
