Common sense is extremely uncommon.  You CAN'T assume your employees have it.   :'(

They write to the lowest common denominator.  and to protect the corporation above all.

Besides, WM doesn't care about shrinkage.  They have written their contracts such that the vendor eats it--thy only get paid for product SOLD.

This seems to me just another in a long list of situations in which a common sense application of employee regulations could have prevented this whole controversy.  I mean, I understand the policies and the reasons for them, but not everything can be covered under a black and white, cookie-cutter policy.  Apply common sense to an individual situation.  maybe something like, "Good job......DON'T EVER DO IT AGAIN!"

It really is a pity that common sense is so uncommon.

+1.....It's the same as 'zero tolerance' in schools.
I had a long, drawn-out, FQ-style comment and TT just summed it up better than I was going to... in way fewer words.  ;)
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

reality, the company is insured.  any losses they have they will get back.  At the end of the day, it costs alot less to have them take the money then it does to have a employee fight back or stop a shop lifter.

Its sucks, but that is the way it is.  Nothing is going to change it.

Based on your reasoning there is no reason for WalMart to have a loss prevention department.  This was a safety issue that they had to deal with, but if they hadn't detained the shop lifter they would not have had to deal with the danger.

So, do we do the right thing, or do we stick our heads in the sand (and another part in the air) and pray it isn't us that gets hurt in the end?

Wal - Mart is the only US company to ever be convicted of slavery charges.  But if they had had the $4 medication plan 5 years  ago it probably would have prevented the heart attack I had last summer.

Where and when was Wal Mart convicted of slavery?  I can't seem to find it anywhere.  Please cite your source.
Did Wal Mart cause your heart attack?  Wow!  If so and you can prove it, go for the gold.

The security guys got a royal screwing, no doubt about it.  They are also damn lucky they were not shot.  Violating corporate policy is a lame excuse.  There is no way that a written policy can cover every circumstance.

Primary purpose is to police the other employees!

The slavery thing was several years ago and I forget the details, look up Wal Mart employee lawsuits, be prepared to spend some time as there are a lot of them.
As to Wal -Mart and my Heart read my last post I already explained it there and don't feel like doing it all over again.

But with insurance why waste money on hiring and training employees and the added insurance cost of this?  That is the thinking I was referring to.

Because insurance will drop you if you make zero attempt to stop it yourself.

I don't know, but am willing to bet WM is self-insured on most things.

There is no "reasoning" for this, other than a "show of force". I guess that's why I refuse to spend my money at wallyworld. Anyone that is THAT against self-defense can piss up a rope. They would have rather had those employees die from gunshots, than defend themselves and live to see the sunlight of tomorrow!  What's WRONG with you people? I don't care WHO I work for, if I have a chance to disarm a gunman and live to see tomorrow, "F" the friggin' job!
