Does anyone reload?
« on: March 06, 2008, 05:49:25 PM »
Put my 6" 45acp 1911 in a H.A.M.M.R. to test some loads. First time in say 4000 reloads that this happened. The firing pin struck the primer, made a dent (looked to be a good strike)  but didn't fire, this happened 3X's at different times. Relaoded these rounds into clip and they all fired the second time around. Before I reshot I measured them all out and found everything to measure out according to the reloading manual. Component or firing pin issue? 200 gr.CSWC (Rainier)4.6, 4.8, 5.0 gr. Bullseye. WLP, Mixed brass (all uniform). Also one of the rounds primer was from a different lot number??????????

Or the HAMMR (whatever that is) contributed?

All other rounds go boom when shooting the gun handheld?

It may be that your primers were seated a little too deep. I've had that happen before.

Sounds like an issue with either the firing pin (or springs), or primer.  The fact that it "looked" like a good hit makes me thing primer issue.  I get this with different brands of .22lr in different guns.  If you have a chance try several in another gun and see if you have similar results.  This is what makes reloading fun ???  Some primers work with this gun and not that, this bullet feeds in this auto but not in that, this crimp seats well in this barrel but not that ...

My main check plan to start narrowing down is to take 100 rounds of factory and shoot it up in suspect gun (this is fun work), and then take LOTS of reload and run it through the suspect gun and another like it to compare success and failure rate (more fun).  Nothing says you can't shoot fun games while testing ... go out and shoot all afternoon and keep a few notes.  Later in the evening you can sit down with your wrists packed in ice and a beverage of choice and see what the notes tell you about the ammo and guns.  Don't you wish high school science was this much fun?

Caldwell HAMMR is the poor mans Ransom Machine Pistol Rest. Rest could be an issue with this pistol, but my 5" 1911 didn't have this issue. Up until this point all rounds either factory FMJ, or lead SWC have functioned flawlessly either hand held or machine held with this 6" 1911.I'm using these full copper coated bullets indoor because my lead level show a slight elevation and because we can't shoot FMJ at my clubs indoor range.

Actually a high primer can cause this.  The inertia from the firing pin just pushes the primer the rest of the way in to the primer pocket and does not have enough energy to set it off.

I did check all rounds after reloading for just this issue. Because I use a DILLION 650 and sometimes my stroke up or down isn't consistant because a problem during reloading comes up thats why I check and recheck than remeasure than check again I'm not saying primers depth isn't an issue. It just never came up in the last 4000 or so reloads. The one thing I did do was to get out my Sinclair primer pocket uniform tool with a hand full of mixed brass (no military) and found the CCI to not be deep enough. However that type of brass only accounted  for one round. The others were SPEER and Winchester. DILLION did send me a tuning tool for the primer seat, But I found that it was in proper alignment. No problem there.

I'd say it was definitely the primers then, All the other rounds worked fine and these worked second time around so its NOT the gun or the rest, bullet  and brass would not effect ignition, if it was powder then they would not have fired the second time around because the primer would no longer work, no other variables so either your primer was high like jframesmith said or you just got a few primers that were made from a harder alloy. In 4000 rounds you had 3 bad (so far) thats less than .1% Thats an acceptable reject rate in most industries. Besides, sometimes Sh%t happens ;D
