Congrats on the outstanding swine killing!!!!!!!
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

First...Haz, I'm jealous...that looks like a great time. And Jr. is moving right along...rifles, then a hand gun, then the old "up close and personal" touch with the sticker. Nice.

No pig hunting in Colorado? These guys are right...just wait awhile. Hell...pigs are a problem in NJ!!!! They'll get to you.

Hey Haz
I called that outfitter of yours. They seem pretty solid. You can't beat the price. $50 per head, $100 per hog, and $25 to quarter it. It's a solid deal. Still, their stand hunting is over feeders which I generally have issues with. That's not so much true for hogs as they are pests and the ranch wants them gone, and just wants to make a buck out of pest control, so I can deal. The question I had was about the dog and buggy hunts. I'm a bird dog guy and love to watch a dog work. They said they can use baying dogs for rifles or a catch dog for knives (guess which way I'm leaning ;D). I think it would be cool to watch the show and learn something even if I don't make a habit of it. So, the question is this. What kind of ranges are we talking about? Is there a clear field of fire or snap shots? The question is whether to bring the AR or the bolt .270 (bayonet in reserve of course). Your input is appreciated.

If ya don't get a hog in the stand (25-30 yards) then they pick ya up in the buggy with the dogs and go find a pig for ya.  The ya shoot 'point blank' range.

Did you ask about using a .270?  They may say it is too small.  I'm 'pretty sure' that they won't let ya shoot with a .223.

Figured on the AR. But seriously, a .270? 130 grains of JSP will take down an elk. I've killed plenty of deer and pigs with that gun and load, and rarely had to shoot twice. One in the boiler room and its game over. Hey, if it's good enogh for Jack O'Conner, it's good enough for me. ;) Though I will admit that that the only reason its its not a 30-06 is that the gunpusher had the LH Ruger .270s in stock and would have to order the '06. He boresighted it for free for me and I said "sold". ;D

PS How much did you tip these guys? I don't often hire guides and I'm always a bit unsure about what a fair tip is.

An elk hasn't been chased all over by dogs and had adrenalin pump through his body.
