An elk hasn't been chased all over by dogs and had adrenalin pump through his body.

True, but they haven't been shot by the mighty Quaker, who has the reflexes of a jungle cat. One handed, over the shoulder, bank shot off the tree, through one ear and out the other at 300 yards. All the while fending off another with my trusty Sig Mosquito! ;D ;D ;D ;D
FQ13, who probably should have waited for the '06 because 180 grains is bigger than 130 grains every single day. Still, you go with what you have. (Unless Haz wants to lend me that sweet .454 carbine........... ;)).

Do you think a sportical with a bayonet on it would work on pigs?

Sportical, yes assuming a full mag. A bayonet mounted on the silly plastic thing? Can I have a baseball bat please? ;D

Figured on the AR. But seriously, a .270? 130 grains of JSP will take down an elk. I've killed plenty of deer and pigs with that gun and load, and rarely had to shoot twice. One in the boiler room and its game over. Hey, if it's good enogh for Jack O'Conner, it's good enough for me. ;) Though I will admit that that the only reason its its not a 30-06 is that the gunpusher had the LH Ruger .270s in stock and would have to order the '06. He boresighted it for free for me and I said "sold". ;D

PS How much did you tip these guys? I don't often hire guides and I'm always a bit unsure about what a fair tip is.

I usually buy a six pack for em while their skinnin, and such (yes I drink one myself) and then give em a twenty.

These pigs is TOUGH!  Please ask them about the 270.  They love my lever guns and serious sidearms.

Sportical being .223?  If so I would NOT try it.  Ifen' yer gonna stick him get a good knife (K-Bar fighting knife or better) and just take a decent side arm with ya.

You think there is that much difference between an '06 and a .270 Haz? You've been playing this game longer than I have. I have killed a few, though generally while feeding and they never knew I was there. Honestly, I've killed most of my pigs with a bow. Shooting a swine hyped up about a baying dog is a new thing for me. I got rid of my .44 mag model 94 :'(, so the .270 is it. But the '06 and .270 seem ballistically pretty much equivilent. Your thoughts?
FQ13 who does have that 18" Brit Enfield bayonet. ;D

FQ the ballistics say there isn't a lot of diff for 150 grain at 100 yards (270 = 2380 fps and 2668 me, 30-06 = 3400 fps and 2824 me) but I am just not SURE they will let you use it.

Oh, they will. I talked to them. Just wanted your take. Hell, they said I could bring the AR, but reccomended strongly against it and I conccur. Its not enough gun. It does bring back that whole AK vs Ar debate and make you think about Tyler's new rifle in an AR 7.62x39 though. I love my AR, but if it won't stop a 200 pound pig without very precise shot placement or emptying a mag, one does have to wonder.........

OK then.  My bullet choice would be a semi-jacket soft point of 150 grain or heavier, no lighter.

Also if some one just wants to 'observe' it costs 25.00.
