Ruger 10/22 vs Marlin 795????/
« on: May 17, 2011, 04:50:38 PM »
I got a circular from Gander the other day. They are having a sale. Ruger 10/22s at $199 and Marlin 795s at $99. Let's assume you aren't going to customize it and just want a plinker/small game gun. Is the Ruger worth paying twice the price? I mean we all own one and like it, but if you aren't going to mess with tweaking it and only want to terrorize coke cans and tree rats, would you drop the extra cash?
FQ13 who has never dealt with the Marlin and is curious about what you think and why.

I'll take a stock 10/22 any day.  I have two of them right now.

Plus, ruger just came out with 25 round mags for them.  I don't know if the marlin has any high cap options.

I honestly just feel the ruger is a better rifle.

And I would put my stock 10/22 up against any 100 dollar any day.

I'll stick with Ruger. Even though you don't plan on customizing it you probably will.

;D I just shot both of them (Ruger 10 22 and Marlin 795) at a weekend Appleseed.  I put about 500 rounds downrange with iron Tech-sights on both.  The Marlin 795 is the most exceptional cheep gun I have ever shot, 1 1/4 inch group at 50 yards;  BUT, it is not really upgradeable, no other stocks, no Volqartson goodies, or trick triggers.  My real complaint is the stick magazine that sticks out in the way of my weak hand support and is not conducive to quick magazine changes.  That said I am shopping for a Ruger 10 22, probably with the green Hogue overmold stock and I am debating on purchasing the stock carbine or target bull barrel to for Appleseed tack driver.  Ultimately it depends on what your long term goals are.
I used to be open minded but my brain kept falling out.

As much as I've held a grudge against Ruger for years, and as poor as their former rifles have performed I'm real impressed with their current line of both 10/'22 and Mini14s.

The deal was in the past they really didn't go for accuracy, but of late they've been paying more attention.   I've owned four Mini14, one Mini30 and a standard model 10/22 none of which would group 1" outside of 10yards.   And the Mini14s wouldn't even hold 10" at a 100 yds.    BUT NOW:  The newer models can are tack drivers especially the 10/22 heavy barrel.   Mine at 50yds will make one hole of 5 shots at 50 yds.  And at 100Yds.   See below

Just let me repeat, if you didn't read it.  THAT'S 100 YARDS.   My super varmint, heavy barrel Savage wouldn't even do that and it cost ~$400.

Of course,  AMMUNITION MATTERS.   Here's a comparison at 50yds.

As Okdkat said,  There's so much more after market for the Ruger.

Will work for ammo

The 10/22 is like legos for adults. Put them together to make many different toys.

Took my 10/22 Tactical to the range just today. Shot several 3/4" groups at 100 yards.  It's not the basic 10/22 and i havent shot the Marlin to compare it to, but I am pretty happy with it.

Honestly, I've never shot mine beyond about 30 yards. I 've had the thing for almost 30 years, first gunI bought with money I earned. I never even considered it at 100 yards because it was a tree rat gun, and 30 yards was what my grandad taught me. Sounds silly in retrospect, but early lessons stick and all that. I'll have to expand my horizons. ;D I'm not going to "pimp" this particular ride, but I am hoping its got what it takes to be half way respectable at longer ranges. I will post a range report on a mid '80s 10/22 in a few days. If its not up to current standards, well, its still good enough for what its for. :-\

FQ, I'll think you'll be pleasantly surprised.  :)

As Alf said: "Of course, AMMUNITION MATTERS."

Take a good variety and see what your rifle likes. If you have anything near a decent scope on it, it will hold minute of ground squirrel at 100 easy.
(and they're not as big as tree rats)
You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles; but at least they drive slowly past schools.
