concealed carry and hugging people
« on: May 23, 2011, 07:52:20 PM »
How do you hug people?

I personal carry a firearm owb on my right side.  And my grandma found my sidearm.  I'm kind of an odd ball in my family now.  I didn't grow up in a traditional hunting family.  My family is very touchy feel-ie hence they lean to the liberal side, thus lots of hugging.

Just wondering how you guys deal with this?

My wife's family is a bunch of huggers and they have never felt my 1911 gov't iwb.  I have a few friends that are also huggers and the same there.

The only time my gun has been felt was a waitress that reached out and touched my side.

Good luck!

Easy. I don't hug people who are either over the age of ten, or who I don't want to sleep with. It makes life a hell of a lot easier on many different levels. Maybe it comes from a Scottish Southern background, but I've never been a hugger and don't intend to start. If I like you, you'll get a handshake, or maybe the "A-frame, one armed, back slap, guy hug". My mom is the only exception and she knows I'm packing. ;D

"It's my cell 'phone" - repeat.

On a visit out west a few years back, my elderly mother walked in on me before I got my shirt on and saw the Glock 27 in my right side FOBUS.  "What do you need that for?" she asked.  "Because everyone in the world is not nearly as nice as you," I answered.

That worked for me.  But I think, "It's my cell phone," is an exceptionally good answer.  Just don't let her try to call anyone.

2 ways I do it.

1 "man hung"  high contact only.  you know shoulder to shoulder.

2  turn that hip away slightly, less likly for it to be felt.

I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

For the libs in the family....probably in a manner so they will know I have a carry piece.  Does two things, first I don't have to feign a hug anymore if they are offended and secondly they actually, gasp, "know someone" who carries.  Knowing someone who carries gives them something to talk about and over time removes their certainty that carrying a gun is a dangerous thing to bystanders far and near...sort of an education kind of thing if you catch the drift.

Oh yeah, a third possible benefit...they are offended, I am disowned, and I don't have to visit with them any more.  Dang shame that my in-laws aren't libs....
