IMHO....John Wayne was great as John Wayne.....and Jeff Bridges was good as Rooster Cogburn....

.....and I liked the new supporting cast better than Campbell and Darby.....
Why, yes....I'm the right-wing extremist Obama warned you about... ;D

I just wish Texas was as free and independent as everyone thinks it is...   :'(

Glen Campbell made one wonder about the "manliness" (and intelligence ) of Texas Rangers.

I thought the remake was very good with a few questions. At the end, Rooster, riding double with snakebit Matty rides right past Ned Peppers horse. Plus three other horses belonging to dead gangmembers. Considering  that in this new version LaBouef, the texas ranger, is still alive, he is dead in the original. With all those horses wandering about why isn't he helping Rooster?

Matties horse, little Blacky, collapses and has to be shot as Rooster rides him to death trying to get Matty to medical help. He had other horses he could have taken with him. Just seemed sloppy to me.

Oh and bye the way, With LaBouef still alive at the end we miss one one of the great lines in the original movie.

Rooster: "Damn that Texan, every time you need him he's dead ! "

Sorry Tim, didn't think telling the ending of a remake that most everyone has seen would make much difference.

Just finished watching it. Haven't figured out all of the reasons why, but I thought it was very poorly done. I have not read the book, so I am guessing that the highly unsatisfactory ending (IMHO) was part of the original story.

Random thoughts -

- The music was mostly just awful; the scene where Le Bouef says he misjudged Mattie and offers her his hand was almost drowned out with syrupy sappy music; just awful; OTOH, the Iris Dement song at the end was wonderful

- It seemed to drag in a lot of areas, including the parts that were not in the John Wayne version so they should have been interesting as they were new

- What is the point of filming crucial scenes at night in really dark darkness? Kinda hard to see what's going on unless you have a real theater with no windows - maybe

- Josh Brolin phones his miniscule role in - and he got 3rd billing in the credits; Hailee Steinfield was like 10th and she was in almost every scene

- Matt Damon was just about the worst possible person to play the role of Le Bouef; OK, maybe Rosie O'Donnell or Timothy Dalton; I liked Damon in the Bourne movies,  but man, in this he sucked;

Of course, just today I was accused of being a old fuddy duddy . . .  ::)
