Major Impact

Article written by Tom Gresham, gun writer, host of Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk radio and several television programs about shooting and firearms.

Certain events impact our lives in clear and immediate ways, changing things -- if not forever -- certainly for many years. The Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and the attack upon the U.S. on September 11, 2001 come to mind.

DC gun ban case: plaintiff's attorney on the Supreme Court oral arguments
4:37 PM ET

Alan Gura [attorney, Gura & Possessky, PLLC, lead counsel for plaintiffs in Parker v. District of Columbia, on appeal as District of Columbia v. Heller]: "As advocates, our role is to respond to the actual questions posed by the Justices, in a direct and honest manner, which would hopefully make the Court more comfortable with our respective positions. That's it.

He is undeniably dedicated to his client, and more so to his principles. Sometimes a tightly controlled and directed blast will be more successful than a really big boom. Lifetime exemption from lawyer jokes. Gonna tell'em (jokes), just not including Mr. Gura and others on my really short list.Mac.

Mr. Gura has it right.  While many of us (me included) thought that he didn't go far enough and could have stated a few more stats on our side, his reasoned argument for not doing so is persuasive.

This was his first time before the supreme court wasn't it?  He did great.  The 80 briefs the Justices received had all the stats they needed.  Good move on his part.  No need to repeat what was sitting right in front of them.
Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference. - George Washington
