Look at the pictures, that is NOT "glacial silt". Glacial silt is the ground stone you find in rocky river beds.
My grandmother used to tell stories about when it happened.

No doubt there is a bit of the Dakotas, Oklahoma, Kansas and any number of dust bowls form the thirties all over the US.  Heck, we have pieces of Chernobyl here in the US...

My son lives in Freeport 5 miles from it. I lived 20 miles from it before moving to the other lesser known desert in the west.

Timothy..........I was sort of half joking so don't take my word for it as I really don't know where it came from.

Everyone in the area has their own opinion. We all just used to joke about being hauled in as it seemed to magically keep growing and became a tourist trap.

What is interesting is the fact that the sand is higher than the surrounding wooded area. Seems to me that if it was there the whole time and has been exposed over time that it would be on the same plain or slightly lower than the surrounding area.
