Well-Traveled Pirate
« on: July 08, 2011, 11:13:45 AM »
I must be the most well-traveled "one-legged fat man" OR some SOB jacked my bank card.   >:(  >:(  >:(  >:(  >:(

Tifton, GA to Toronto, Canada to Dallas, TX in less than two hours Wednesday.................

Thank goodness my bank was on top of things. We used the card at wally world around 1:00 PM and forgot something and went back by wally's around 3:00 PM and the card was frozen.

Man, just a little icing on a hell of a week.   >:(  >:(  >:(

I lost my VISA card about 8 months ago.  It has been being used by someone in Atlanta, but I haven't reported it missing yet.

They are only spending about half what I was.   ;D ;D

Gotta watch those one legged bastards from Georgia. They move speedy quick. 6,000 miles in 120 minutes :o. That's a lot  faster than the average fighter jet Peg. You need an infomercial on your workout secrets. ;D
FQ13 who is glad your bank was on top of stuff and that this happened at home, not while you were on the road someplace.

Got that beat, Peg. Back in the days when you could clone cell phones, I had mine hacked. Calls originated in FL, GA, TX, IL, MI, and NY within moments of each other. The bill I got was almost 1/2" thick. Luckily, the provider ate all of it, and got me a new number.

Sucks to have your card hacked. As my son said, Wells Fargo is the most robbed stagecoach in the US of A, and that's what happened to me too. I caught it almost immediately (retentive on checking bank transactions, I am) and WF acted as if they could not care less. I pointed out that if they acted quickly, they could contact the online vendor and prevent any product loss (Puma shoes - over $1000 worth), but the whole time it was my fault and I had to prove I did not order the shoes!

WF ended up eating over $400, but that is chump change to them.

Our younger son had his hit a few months ago and the lady at the bank said that much of the info is stolen over wireless transfer systems at gas stations where you pay at the pump. She said the best way to safeguard against this is to use gift cards at wally world and go to your bank and get a card that is not linked to your bank account (like a travel card) or buy the pre-loaded cards like they sell at pharmacies and such......and then there is good old cash.

Five or so years ago we had our phone number jacked also. The phone company called and asked if we had been making calls to the United Kingdom and several Caribbean islands. The bill was around $900 for that month, but the phone co waived it after we signed the necessary paperwork. They said it was due to a computer virus.

I had that happen about 4 years ago with my biz credit card.  They spent 78k in a matter of about 15 mins.  They actually maxed my card out( at that time it had 150k limit)

Stuff was bought all over the states and the net.

AMX was right on top of it, while it was not uncommon for me to spend 10s of thousands in a day, the places it was buying stuff from sent of the alarms.

Pretty much any time I spent $1000+ bucks in a day, i'd get a call from them making sure it was a legit.  I always thanked them.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

Here's a question on the gift cards. If they get lost or stolen do you get a new one (less what you spent before reporting it obviously) or is it just gone same as cash?
FQ13 whos never used one.

Like cash, I expect it would be gone, gone, gone.
If it is one issued by a bank it may be protected, they could tell you more. The ones you buy at places like CVS would most likely just be in the wind.

I use only cash or money orders. Like FQ I would like info on the gift cards I have seen at Walgreens.

I used by bank's (Navy Federal Credit Union) VISA/Check card for an online game purchase about a month ago, through PayPal.  Before the page had even refreshed the bank called the house with an automated verification request.  "Your card was used to pay a fee off $20 at a 'game arcade', press 1 if this was a valid purchase."
