Security Six

Local shop has two different Security Six's in .357
One is marked 1981 which is a 4"
One is marked 1985 which is a 6"

I am interested in the 4"
I understand that they are built like a brick $chick house, and appear to be well liked, and last generations.

What do I need to know about them (or specifically the 4") to not look like a boob when I talk to him.
They both are stainless steel and bot have the price of $329 (if I could afford both - I would... yah yah yah)

Any particular reason he calls out the date of them on the price tag?

I owned a Ruger Police Service-Six 4" barrel. Practically identical to the Service Six. It was, based on Ruger's database, a 1985 Orange County Sheriff's revolver sold at police auction,(back when they did that type of thing)...for the semi-auto upgrades.

 Like you posted, it is a a well built, solid, accurate, tough revolver.

The Police Service Six I owned had more of a bull barrel, with a thicker wall, but not by much at all. The Security Six, was more popular, and at $329 for the SS version....sounds like a reasonable price if the condition is solid.

Question. Are the grips original wood or rubber?

Still a great pistol. Not quite sure the relevancy of the "shop-guy" mentioning the date. Perhaps someone else can chime in.

P.S. OBTW,....I wish I had mine back. :'(

My first handgun was a 4" Ruger Security Six in stainless bought slightly used (fired 15 times) 35 years ago this summer.  I still have it and it is still sound after 10s of thousands of rounds.  They are built like tanks and extremely reliable.  $329 is a decent price if it is sound.  In the past couple of years I have seen very good examples sell from $275 - $350 dollars.  A few later ones were available with Pachmayer rubber grips, some with Ruger medallions, but they may have been special contract runs.  They were also available with standard small stocks or larger target stocks and Ruger stll has a few of those available here:

Excellant revolver for the price. You could pistol whip an elephant with it and it still will work.

Babysat one for a year while a buddy was cruising the Med. It was a 4 inch, magnaported with Hogue grips.  The bastard would not sell it to me! ;D

4" Nice looking slightly lighter in color wood grips
6" Darker wood.

So if you we're presented with a choice of a 4" GP-1000, SP-101 or the Security Six?
Which one goes home?

Security Six, the other two are fine but clunky looking IMHO.

First center-fire handgun I ever fired was a Security-Six........It belonged to a good friend and was his first center-fire handgun purchase. He still has it....and I wish I had one myself.
