Bastards did a similar thing to my wife one year at Christmas, except that the item they scanned in for $50 wasn't even hers. Turned out it was a toy that cashier had under the counter and scanned it in along with my wife's items (and then stuck it back under the counter). Thank goodness she had kept a good idea of what her running total should be and the alarm in her head went off when it was $50 too high. Then the cashier acted like she was ignorant of the whole thing. CS acted like it was no big deal either. We got our $50 back, and I guess some other poor soul paid for her kids toy, because I doubt the CS manager did anything about it.

I must admit that I have not stopped using "Walton's wallet vacuum service" completely, but they don't get near the money out of me as they used to. I try to keep my dollars locally if I can......but there are a very few limited items that you can't get anywhere else in town, so I have to get it there.

not been in one for 15+ years...

I've turned down work for them in the past, and will again.  ( known way too many contractors that have done work for them, talk about SLOW paying and a PITA to get them to even do that)
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

So,you happened to get a crook for a cashier.  Crooks are everywhere. I cannot think it is Wallyworld's policy to employ crooks or to assist them in stealing from their customers.  I think I might have been more proactive about something that indicates intentional theft.  Heck, I just checked my Visa record and didn't recognize a $200 charge--I'd forgot I put $200 of diesel in the motorhome (brought it up to 1/2 of a full tank).

Now, I am not going to come to a raging defense of Wallyworld, but they have stuff I need at a prioce I can afford, so I guess I'm going to continue being a patron.

It was the CS manager's attitude about it all that soured me on Wally world more than the actual theft attempt incident. I know thieves are everywhere, but after reporting it (because the manager had to approve us getting our money back) the CS manager acted like WE were the problem. If you had a person working for you and they basically attempted to outright steal from a customer, I bet you wouldn't laugh about it while taking on a "sh!t happens" point of view (in front of the other customers to boot).
This was not an isolated incident either.....

Its the arrogance of being "too big to care". If they piss off half the people in the store on any given day, where else are those folks going to go? Right back to Wallmart until there is a comparably priced alternative. Currently there isn't one. Eventually there will be. Probably Chinese owned, hell, why not cut out the middleman? "It like Wallmart, only cheaper". ;D

I think we all have our complaints about the box stores. Unfortunately, like it or not, they are here to stay. I admit that I use them for groceries. (and Sams) but little else. You get what you pay for when it comes to durable goods. So my local "high end" sporting goods store will continue to get most of business when it comes to clothing, and outdoor gear.

How is the cashier being a crook for herself? If she scans a "secret" item, padding the sale, the extra $30 (in this case) goes into the till, and the computer records it even if the cash never hits the drawer. If the drawer comes up short, the cashier is liable for it. So the cashier cannot be stealing for herself, only the store. Unless I'm missing something, this appears to be fraud perpetuated by the store.
