Try the .45 Colt with self defense loads like Silvertips. If you want more power (and recoil) try some heavy loads by Cor-Bon or Buffalo Bore. They're more powerful than some .44 Mags. That should satisfy your needs.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

And if that doesn't work, wrap the grips with 24 grit sandpaper.   ;D

Corbon makes some doozies. They don't give them away (about $2 a pop), but damn if they aren't hot. 1200+ FPS and 800 or so foot pounds. :o Sadly, the Bond isn't rated plus P on .45. The  9mm or ,38 is no problem, but not the .45s.

The question is answered. I went with a .357 in 3 1/2". It should be more than adequate to the task. I'll get a box of Speer Gold Dot short barrels if I can find them (they are scarce on the ground down here), otherwise I'll fall back on Golden Sabres. That should be plenty from a BUG.

Hang on to that little thing...my SP101 was "darn snappy" with magnum loads at 25 ounces.  More than a few cylinders and the hand was a bit tender!

I have Federal Hydrashoks loaded when I have the .357 barrels installed, I have either silvertips or Glasers for the .45 Colt barrels. The Federals aren't that bad I shot about 20 through it at one sitting and it didn't bother me any.
