Tom. I think you are correct that the two theories are not mutually exclusive.  There needs to be an Ultimate Source for everything.  Nothing comes from nothing.  Everything comes from something--an Originator.  Matter can be neither created nor destroyed--except by God.

My personal belief is that God is that source.  How He managed it is not of great concern.  THAT He managed it is self-evident.

I take issue only with those who would impose a 4000-6000-year time line on the process.  One hike down the Grand Canyon as a 14-year-old with my dad--a dedicated Christian who also holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science--and I better understood the age of the earth.  It's all shown there in layers.

Additionally, I don't believe God is a practical joker who would stratify layers according the the chronological logic of time just to fool His followers.  That would just be mean.

FWIW,

Crusader

Thats as well put as Ive ever heard, I also have cause to believe that something happened about 12000 years ago to leap ahead those ones who were established around the globe.
AN ARMED SOCIETY IS A POLITE SOCIETY

Here's a YouTube link to the movie I mentioned earlier, Expelled! No Intelligence Allowed. I think you all will enjoy whether you agree or disagree with the film maker's premise. The link below is part 1 of 10 so it's Quaker-Attention-Span friendly  ;D:

Here's a link to the full length movie.
If you don't read Polish just ignore the sub titles  ;D

Science and religion have been feuding for centuries, Inquisition versus Illuminati type stuff that involved actual violence, such as the "Witch trials" and the French revolutions attacks on the Church.
But it's BS.
Just like everything else in creation they are equal opposites, and you need both.
With out science you get a church that placed Galileo under house arrest for stating that the sun, not the Earth, was the center of the universe, The same Church that insisted the Earth was flat, despite every coast dweller on the planet being able to see the curvature with their own eyes.
With out religion you get scientists with absolutely no sense of responsibility, Prior to the "Los Alamos A bomb test"
Scientists considered it possible that the bomb could trigger an uncontrolled combustion of all the Hydrogen in the atmosphere, destroying all life.
The scientific answer was, "Well, push the button and let's find out".
Then there is human cloning, prevented only by intervention of religious groups.
While scientists scream about intellectual censorship they completely ignore the most basic question of manufacturing.
What do you do with the rejects ?
It is not an either/ or question . As with light and dark, or fire and water, they are both needed, and need to be kept in balance for humanity to survive.

I'm in general agreement with you, but the last sentence, I strongly agree.
