Beagles

My boy wants a dog and he wants a beagle.  Tell me the horror stories and the tales of wonder beagle, so I can convince his Mom that there is enough room in the dog house for both of us.

My family has had two beagles, both of them in the 13'' high range and were completely different personality wise. Our first dog was for the most part good but had a mischevous side, chewed on things (my things!), hated me and was very energetic. Our second dog we "rescued" from a humane society that extremely poorly managed, just a month later it was revealed to be so diseased ridden that they had to...... well lets just say we wouldn't have her now if we had waited longer. She rarely ever barks, mostly out of jeleousy, she's extremely docile and sleeps most of the day, dumb as a brick but loving. We believe that she was abused before she ended up in the humane society so that may have something to do with it. Also because of that she was sick for that entire first year but she's been doing fine ever since.

They seem to grow very attached to one member of the family and then attachments to others grow in time. Unfortunately to my dad's dismay, neither one has been a rabbit dog. In fact our current one is usually chased by them rather than chasing them.

Alf the Wonder Beagle has been the dog of a lifetime. She is sweet, relatively smart, quiet, mischievous, quirky and without an aggressive, mean bone in her body. She was destined for the show ring from a big gun 13-inch tri-color beagle breeder in Atlanta — both her parents and all four grandparents are show champions — but she grew TOO BIG, so we got her for a song.

Damned hard to housebreak, but as wonderful a companion animal as a person could hope for...

We also had the housebreaking problem as well, it takes a while but they are so worth the time and effort. Whenever I'm in good enough position for a pet a beagle would be at the top of my list. :)

We have Gordon and English Setters now.

But my first two dogs were beagles. Both great little doggies. I had Tim as a kid in high school.

We got Samantha aka Sam when I was stationed at Ft Hood. She was a great hunter and good with the kids. She lived to be 14 and died while we were in Germany of old age. Good rabbit hound who would hunt pheasants and quail as well -- but you had to keep up with her when she was on a bird. You could tell when it was a rabbit and when it was a bird by her actions and voice.

Great dogs for young families.

We rescued 2 from some people down the road they were in very poor shape as Saks had to have a vet remove the chain that had grown into her neck and both had been started all most to death which is on of the reasons we took them as they were going to shoot them both, the other one Dude was as mangy as mangy gets and with a proper diet and medicines got him back to a running dog , but unfortunately he got away one night and when I got home from work in the morning I went out to find him about 200 yards into the woods and he had lost a fight with a bear(seen the tracks) about all that was left was the coller. But Saks is a true outdoor dog that is into her years now and happy in her dog house( an old pop up trailer that she thinks is a palace) but I admit that she really needs to go on a diet(like me) she is getting so big you can barley put your arms around her and I can't help but laugh at her with those stumpy little legs. All in all get the beagle. You won't have a sad day in your life.

As I have already stated in another topic, my son will get his dog.  The pup will not be ready to come home till June.  (At the present time she isn't even a twinkle in her Daddy's eye yet)  When it happens ( the pup coming home, not the conception) pictures will be posted.  Thanks to everyone for the info.  My better half thought all beagles do is bark. :D

I've got a house full of Yorkies. Not so good huntin' dogs...I rack the slide and they go crawl under someting and shiver.  :o
