Another story of the media hypocrisy. IMHO, I wish this man was armed and shot them. Than you would have heard from the "activists" saying this was a racial assault.

AN 84-YEAR-OLD ex-university official savagely attacked by four young punks during a walk in Wissahickon Valley Park earlier this week theorizes that the beating he endured was a cruel game of "get the old geezer."


Jim Shea, a former vice president of university relations for Temple, from 1968 to 1983, walks up to five miles on Forbidden Drive, in Fairmount Park, three times a week, but that type of stamina wasn't enough to stave off the lowlifes who not only beat him bloody, but dealt a blow to one of the things he holds most dear - his pride.

Shea was near the Valley Green Inn, on Forbidden Drive, in the Wissahickon Valley Park, about 1:15 p.m. Monday when he was hit from behind.

"I felt a real something to the head, a real blow to the head from behind," he said. "It knocked me to the ground; that was the biggie."

Shea said the four assailants continued to beat him for minutes while he was on the ground. He said they were black, appeared to be between 16 and 20, and three of them were wearing La Salle sweatshirts.

Police and Shea said that at least one of the attackers used a rock to hit him, causing deep cuts above his eyes. They all kicked and punched him while he was on the ground, conscious the entire time.


"There was only one I really saw well because he came back to kick me," Shea said. "The others spent a great deal of the time laughing."

The real "stunner" to Shea is that they left without trying to take his wallet, keys or cellphone.


"I think it was just to get the old geezer," Shea said. "They were some bad kids with rancid souls."


He tried to walk back to the Valley Green Inn alone, dripping with blood, but a bicyclist came to his aid.

Shea spent four hours at Chestnut Hill Hospital, getting stitches in his face - from his eyelid to his cheek - and treatment for two large scrapes on his leg and elbow. Shea also said two bones in his nose were broken.

The attackers have not yet been caught, police said yesterday. Despite that, Shea said he plans to be back out walking on Forbidden Drive next week.

"I hope to make myself do it," he said. "It's been a wonderful thing for me at my age."

Damn straight. I met Dr. Shea in a job interview at Temple. I didn't get the job, but he was a nice and well spoken man. The idea that someone would treat him like that makes my blood boil. He is a real gentleman of the old school. He might not have liked the cut of my jib enough to hire me, but he is a gentleman and a scholar and deserves far better than he got.  Lets be honest, racism works both ways. I detest the Klan, I have publically disowned my great grand dad who was a member because as a libertarian you judge every individual on theirt merits and nothing else should matter. I am waiting for the black community to do the same. And I'm waiting..... :-\

Which is why we have come to expect  Rwandan behavior from blacks.
Encounter a group of them, expect to be robbed and or beaten, give them any slack and they steal everything in sight, starting with the booze and electronics as in NO during Katrina, give them half a lousy excuse like the Rodney King verdict and they burn down their neighborhood.
I never really gave it much thought until I started following  politics closely, my focus had been Foreign policy/ Cold war.
When I thought about it at all I figured "people are all the same but based on my experiences I would not want to live next door to most blacks, but the Klan was wrong".
As the subject gets more attention I'm coming to the conclusion that we are not all the same. while I still don't think the Klan should have lynched people simply for being black, on the other hand, when they did, the streets were safe at night never mind at lunch time.
I also notice, as I have posted before, that the "Civil Rights movement drew most its white support from northern wealthy, college students who's only contact with blacks was "Amos and Andy" or seeing Bill Cosby on "I Spy"
While on the other hand, the segregationists were older, more experienced other wise generally respectable people who actually knew, and interacted with blacks.

Had this been the other way around (black victim, whit perps) the professional race baiters and their accomplices in the media would be out in full force shoveling out divide-and-conquer and appealing to the basest of human emotions.  I don't look at things that way.  I think it doesn't matter what color the victim and perps are.  The very concept of "hate crimes" is yet another poisonous attempt by the state to continue racial animosity.  A crime is a crime.  I have no idea why all "hate crime" legislation has not been struck down due to them violating equal protection under the law.  Wait, yes, I do know why.  It is because there is no rule of law.  I wish the guy had been carrying a GI model .45 and had given them the Sgt. York treatment.

Hate crimes have a long history, in the world and U.S. (reference Charles Lynch 18th century Va. planter who led raids against the Tories, tarred, feathered, and hung them...hence "lynching".) Hate crime laws got on the books after the Civil War.

It's foundation, in world history involves the premise of "biased-motivated" crimes...

The very concept of "hate crimes" is yet another poisonous attempt by the state to continue racial animosity.

Mitchell, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a Wisconsin statute which provides for an enhanced sentence where the defendant "intentionally selects the person against whom the crime [is committed] because of the race, religion, color, disability, sexual orientation, national origin or ancestry of that person." The defendant in Mitchell had incited a group of young Black men who had just finished watching the movie "Mississippi Burning" to assault a young white man by asking, "Do you all feel hyped up to move on some white people," and by calling out, "You all want to f..k somebody up? There goes a white boy; go get him."

Same case applies here.. What's worse is that these punks were even more "manly" by targeting and specifically zeroing in on an 84 year old.

I do agree that s GI .45 "solution", would have been more appropriate.

If they are found it will be interesting to see the reaction of the Black community.  If any decency exists, they would be demanding maximum sentences for this animals.

One odd note in the story.

It mentions they did not take, among other things, his cell phone.

After the beating he did not use it to call for help.

Could be a lot of reasons:  It was broken in the attack;  He was too rattled to think of it; or, having not grown up with a cell phone, using it was not second nature to him...would not occur to him even had it been a minor emergency.

This crime report, like all the others we endure each day, should be another reminder of how important it is to minimize our predator appeal.  Predators will always seek easy prey - the elderly, frail, weak, handicapped, distracted, or lone individual unable to defend themselves easily.  Folks all too often allow themselves to be lulled into a false sense of security... it can never happen to me, not in this neighborhood, not at this time of day, etc, etc.  Evil can be anywhere, at anytime, and fall upon anyone.  Unlike those of us who frequent this forum, far too many people never consider simple things that would enhance their own safety - be part of a group, maintain 360-degree awareness, and carry some means of defense.

1  Ever notice this is only applied to whites ? No matter how heinous the crime minorities, and specificly blacks, are never charged with "hate crime".
2  If you hate a group of people so much that you can't see one with out attacking them you should get a reduced sentence as with other forms of "mental impairment". The way Europeans do with other types of "crimes of passion".
