"Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the people

You may have heard this song on the radio and licked the melody line and upbeat rhythms.  However, it is a song about violence, bullying and guns,

This is not fringe or gansta music.  This is mainstream pop 40 music playing on stations running formats from teen to senior citezens.

Unfortunately songs like this have been written since people have been singing.  "White Rabbit" by Jefferson Airplane was about heroin.  Hell, "Ring around the rosey" is about the plague.

A local radio station recently did a whole block on "murder" songs...songs about violence, good and bad, quite literally, run all the way through the spoken traditions. I've done a lot of blues songs on the podcast, dating from the beginning of recordings, that had the same subject matter as "Pumped Up Kicks."

It is our nature, perhaps, to glorify violence because we monkeys are so darn good at it.

After all. I shot the sheriff, but I did not shoot the deputy...

Violence-themed music has been around a long time.
