Precisely the reason I always carried a key to the door of the squad car with me.  Leave it running, but lock it.  And anytime the car was outside my physical control it was locked.  I had this paranoia about getting killed with my own shotgun or carbine,.

I'd rather be killed with my own shotgun.
It would save me from having to explain why I had to finish my shift in a Taxi 

And they drove an ARMORED van why?

having guns stolen from cars happens alot more then gets reported.  I know a FBI agent that had his mp5 stolen out of his crown vic, in the local FBI buildings parking lot.( only reason he was not fired)

Not saying the Trooper isn't going to catch a little heat but think about the situaltion a little bit:
Is the driver really a cop or a joy riding pot-head?
