Almost brings a tear to your eye doesn't it? 

I think I'm going to get an AR soon, like sooner than my wife would like but not soon enough for me 

Maybe just a basic rifle for now, future truck gun if you will.  In the future I'll build one my way

Weigh your options carefully since there are so many of them.
My personal preference would be fully flat top with a red dot and folding BUIS.
In either 7.62X39 ( I have heard of feed problems ) or one of the short 30's like .300BLK.

Ignore him  . Buy a standard AR with a removable carry handle and a top rail. That way you can shoot it with irons or put an optic on it. My "El Cheapo" Sportical flat top has turned into a hopeless money pit trying to get irons, an optic and a sling mount. Buy it once and buy it right. I'd look at DPMS, they are the Chevy of ARs and priced accordingly. Get a standard A4 (rifle or carbine) and add a flip up rear BUIS. You'll be happier and save money in the long run. As far as caliber, look at nothing but 5.56. Its standard, its cheap, and its available at Wally World. And, to be un-PC, its a battlefield pick-up. If you want 7.62x39 buy an AK. Head to head its probably a better rifle than an M-forgery. The .300BLK is a nice round, but good luck finding ammo if things go south, and that's what you're buying the rifle for in the first place. Just my .02.

I'm just telling tales on myself and giving hard earned advice. It boils down to this. For a first gun, buy something that's good to go out of the box and then improve on it. Make sure it has a bit of room to grow. But don't start out with a fixer upper, that was my error. For a second gun, I might follow in your footsteps Tom, and order parts and build what I want. But that ain't the way to go for someone who doesn't have your experience in building guns. I mean you did it for a living for how many years? As for the boutique rounds? Yeah they're great, but how are you going to reload on day seven of a STF situation?

OK, I get you now FQ.
But lordy, you can pick pretty much any option nearly off the shelf and the only thing I'm saying is avoid the standard sight post, you can order the gun that way no hassle and if you decide you want other things   it's a PITA while the flip up sites function the same, are idiot proof to install and leave room for other optics.
Unless you reload it might be better for the first one to stick with 5.56 because of availability, but it's still just a hot .22 to my thinking.

I have been leaning toward doing exactly this, especially with the 300BLK. But for the first one I think I'll stick with 5.56 just for ammo.   I had been thinking around $1400 for the rifle and BUIS so I can get something good but I don't want to buy just the name.
 
Once I start reloading (my dad will be down here the end of next month and we'll talk about a Dillion 650 for 45, 9, 5.56 and .308 ) its a simple barrel swap to go from 5.56 to 300BLK.

With so many AR's variations around, $1400 will get you a darn nice one. S&W M&P 15T's are +/- $900 for the standard. with or without carry handle, with our without standard front sight. They are basically a STAG. Rock River, Armalite's Bushmasters, DPMS, etc,....

all will work, and work well.

Keep it simple, knowing you can always add this here, tweak this there, swap a stock part for another more suited to your application.

Find a friend with an AR, and split 1000rd deals on the web. 500rds, for approx. $150 bucks and a six/twelve-pack of good mags, and your in good shape.

That is going to be the hardest part of all of this.  Three teenage daughters that go through money faster than I could if I tried and a wife with MS that can't work puts all the burden on me (which is why I went back to school when I did and for what I did). 

Between the AR, NFA items, reloading, competition guns, associated gear and ammo I need a second job that pays more than the first
