Hello queenb, and welcome, this forum is a great resource for knowledge and opinions from some very qualified individuals.
Firearms are personal, mass produced at an industrial scale, but still personal. Some one may insist on this, but someone else, the opposite.
Do your research, go to your local range/shop, and talk to people.
Personally, as "new" to guns for personal defense; Get a good name brand Ruger, S&W, .38/.357 revolver. Small to medium frame.
and test drive it. Most ranges you can rent "something" and try it. .380 or less is better than nothing, but not ideal for a novice.
Keep it simple, enjoy and practice. NRA Safety Course, Videos, and a great forum (this one), can help you a great deal.
Welcome and good luck
