So, here I am rifling through all of the threads with little to no idea about who people are and what their backgrounds are. I know Rob of course and Ross (sup you fuzzy little foreigner;-) But I don't know most of the rest of you.
Now, coming from where I did (Naval Special Warfare) I understand that there are some opsec issues so by all means keep it vague if you have to. But it would be cool to hear where you are (and if you are under some ridiculous gun laws like Illinois or the UK), what you are doing for training and other things like that.
Me personally, I spent 10 years in the Nav, all but 6 months with the Teams (either in training or in a platoon). I met Rob as an instructor at the Spec War center in late 05. I went to Valhalla as a student, learned the Combat Focus system and knew right away that I had found something that was better than anything that I had learned up to that point. Almost immediately I asked Rob if I could come back and teach the stuff. Two years later I got out of the Nav and moved to beautiful Montrose, Colorado. Since then I have been with Rob and Jeremiah Miles through some interesting times. I would say that I have improved as an instructor (although my shooting skills have fallen off to a degree) and am teaching just as much as I can find the opportunity. I still work with Rob when I can, have set up some other shooting courses and helped make some instructors better, as well as running a CrossFit gym in Montrose.
What I have learned in the last few years is simple; know why you do something, if you don't know why than ask why, if the instructor can't answer why than find a new instructor. Do things that make sense for your and not what makes sense for Jack Bauer, CTU or any other BS movie land or military land group. I have learned that the best defense is truly more about the decisions that we make than they type, size or caliber of gun we choose to carry, but it is still better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
I have made a lot of good friends since I left the Navy, not the least of all Rob. He has helped me learn to apply critical thinking to situations that I would have normally just applied brute force, elbow grease and copious amounts of spit to. For that I thank him.
I look forward to hearing from as many of you as would post here. Until then, keep your powder dry, Yo Ho!
