Pit Bull Shot In The Head Trying To Protect Owner, But Miraculously Survives
'Kilo' Didn't Take Too Kindly To Gunman Pushing Into Staten Island Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There’s a dog that took a bullet, possibly saving his owner’s life. And surprisingly, the 12-year-old pit bull shot in the head survived.

The pit bull named “Kilo” was off to the vet Wednesday for a check-up, after taking a bullet for his owner, Justin Becker.

“He’s a hero. He saved my life. He went to protect me and he did his job,” Becker told CBS 2′s John Slattery.

Even Dr. Greg Panarello, the veterinarian who treated the dog, was impressed.

“Incredibly lucky. Incredibly lucky,” Panarello said.

It happened Saturday evening in Becker’s apartment house in the Graniteville section of Staten Island. A gunman, posing as a FedEx deliveryman, wearing a uniform, rang the bell and said he had a package, but then pushed his way into the apartment.

“He barged in. My first reaction after seeing the gun is push him out, so I pushed him to the door. Like I said, he fell like wedged right by the door. I slammed him inside the door and he was stuck and tried to get out now because he was getting crushed,” Becker said.

His girlfriend has been holding the dog and let go.

“I was shocked and I was terrified,” Nicole Percoco said.

The dog went after the gunman.

“Now Kilo came out to protect me. Grrr, he tried to come through the door at the guy, his head was out. Grrr, then I heard the guy, three gunshots,” Becker said.

One of the shots hit the dog in the head.

“It did ricochet off the skull and went straight down and exited at the neck,” Dr. Panarello said.

The vet staff put a superhero insignia on this bandage. Kilo was up and around Wednesday, going for walks just three days after being shot.

“I think it’s amazing. He saved my life,” Becker said.

You’ve heard of a cat with nine lives. Kilo seems well on his way.

The victim described the gunman as a black man in his 40s, about 5-foot-8 to 5-10, with a salt and pepper beard, carrying a pistol with a clip.

Well done Kilo!

We have a family with a couple of pits in the park here.  Damn things are playful as puppies but I do pay attention when I'm walking by their house.  Often consider the best place would be the center of the chest on any K9 that was coming at me but these two seem harmless.  One of them has to be the biggest damn pit bull I've ever seen!  A bitch of about 100 pounds at least.

+1 Timothy, Encountered the good, bad, and ugly from breeds that are supposed to be "domesticated",,,,also have seen Cesar Milan aka "Dog Whisperer" use Big Daddy, a huge pit bull stud as a counseling dog for another dog that went to the dark side and recovered.

There are leetle dogs that will tear your ankles off, and fighting/protective breeds that are wussies...My sister could hang off our 130 lb. Warlock Doberman's face as a toddler, and the dog loved it. But if the door was kicked in, (or a cocky meter man, back in the day) came into the yard, he was all business, until my Mother gave him the back off command in Swedish...

If you want a pit bull, you have to BE THE ALPHA, no excuses, no laziness, they are work dogs and need extra attention, training, work, play, and discipline. It ain't a lapdog, or porch lounger....

This is a GOOD DOG

This is a lucky, fugly dog.... ;D

Yea, Big Daddy was one humongous Terrier for sure!  It's amazing what that guy can do with a dog as well!  I've used some his technique on my little mutt and the stuff works, no doubt!

As they say, there are NO bad dogs, only bad owners!

RIP Daddy!

I don't believe that.
Other species are no different than humans, some are just miserable  A holes, and some are dumber than dirt, regardless of breed.

Gotta disagree there Tom.

Dogs are not the problem, people are!  Just like some people shouldn't be able to have kids, some don't have the knowledge to own a dog either!

As long as you're the one in control, no breed of dog will give you a problem.  As soon as you lose that control, the dog will take advantage and eventually become nasty even to the point of attacking the owner.  It's really not much different with children!

The Milan guy proved over and over that the owners were ALWAYS the problem, the dogs were just doing what was instinctual and breed has little to do with that.  It's just that the strength of a breed and it's size make some more dangerous than others.

I agree that the owner "sets" the dogs behavior, but some dogs are still dirt dumb.

But that doesn't make them bad necessarily!  My little mutt ain't no Rhodes Scholar by any stretch of the imagination but he's smarter than his Mommy!  He has my wife wrapped around his little paw for sure!

For sure...not bad...just dumb..

My BIL had a Russian Wolf Hound name Nikki and a Border Collie named Yankee.

I would see Nikki sniffing at the door nob to outside while figiting with his rear legs...obviously needed to head natures call.

He would stand there for a bit and then Yankee would pick up  his leash and go take it to my BIL

Border Collie is a smart dog. Russian Wolf Hound inbred to stupidity.

I've got a little Beagle, and she is the most manipulative little turd I have ever come across. She is cute, and KNOWS it. Uses that to her advantage. She is about as subtle as a sledgehammer, but it's never hard to figure out what she wants. And yes, she has me completely trained. She knows a sucker when she sees one.  ;)
