Congrats and Thank You Kim Rhode
« on: July 29, 2012, 09:01:09 AM »
Received this email from National Shooting Sports Foundation this morning:

Quote
U.S. skeet shooter Kim Rhode makes history! GOLD! First American to win 5 medals in 5 consecutive Olympics. Rhode shot a finals 25 for 99/100 on the day to shatter the previous Olympic finals record (prelims + finals) of 93. You can watch the TV replay of the Women's Skeet final at 1:30 p.m. Eastern on NBC Sports Network. Congrats to Kim and USA Shooting from all of your friends at NSSF!

Her Olympic Record:

1996:  Gold - Double Trap
2000:  Bronze - Double Trap
2004:  Gold - Double Trap
2008:  Silver - Skeet
2012:  Gold - Skeet

From Wikipedia:

Quote
Kimberly "Kim" Susan Rhode (July 16, 1979[1]) is an American double trap and skeet shooter. A California native, she is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and six-time national champion in double trap. She was the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Most recently she won a silver medal in skeet shooting at the 2008 Summer Games.[2] Born in Whittier, California,[1] Rhode began sport hunting at an early age, traveling on African safaris by the age of 12. At 13, she won her first world championship title in women's double trap shooting. Rhode won a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Games, making her the youngest female gold medalist in the history of Olympic shooting. She later won a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Rhode also won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

After double trap shooting was eliminated from the Olympic games, she has concentrated on skeet. At the 2007 world cup competitions in Santo Domingo, she set a new final world record in this event with 98 hits (73 in the qualification round and a perfect 25 in the final). She went on to win the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in women's skeet.

Rhode is co-host of the Outdoor Channel's TV program Step Outside.[3] Rhode studied veterinary medicine at Cal Poly Pomona university.[4]

On September 11, 2008, Rhode's competition shotgun was stolen from her pickup; she had been using it in competition for eighteen years.[5] The gun was returned to her in January 2009 after it was discovered during an unrelated search of a parolee's home; the parolee was charged with possession of stolen property.[6]

On July 28th at the 2012 London Olympics, Kim won the Gold Medal in Skeet shooting, with an Olympic record score of 99. This also tied the world record in this event. With this medal, Kim became the only American athlete to ever win medals in five consecutive Olympics.

You have that right!

U.S. Olympian sets a U.S. record, and NBC has dropped their planned replay of the event, I have not heard anything about it on NBC Sports when they give their recaps of the day and week, and in checking three daily papers there is no mention of it.

A thirty-three year old athlete winning their fifth medal (third gold) in her fifth Olympic Games, and this is not newsworthy.  A medal in each of five consecutive Olympic Games, and the main stream media manages to ignore it.

I don't want to take away from what Kim has done, but how about a push to get IPSC into the Olympics.  IPSC has more to do with the historic purpose of the games, and being an international organization there are competitors from nearly every nation in the world.

US Media refuse to cover Olympic shooting events because they show guns in a favorable light.
That has been network policy since at least the Clinton years.

Actually NBC did give some air time today to Kim. Including showing her final couple of shots and a studio interview then they closed this afternoon's broadcast with Kim receiving her gold and her crying during the SSB.

They couldn't totally ignore this accomplishment.

ESPN has been covering the results of the Olympics and has shown the results of all the events so far...even shooting.

Its also not popular.

I beg to differ TAB, during the winter games the Alpine event, where cross-country skiing "and" rifle shooting at targets during various stages is very popular Internationally.

These summer events have 17 nations competing.....in the trap event.

We (The U.S.) just happen to be really exceptional.

But the MSM, buries it on the back up channel, MSNBC, at the 2:00 a.m. coverage to say they "covered" it....

Have you seen the ping pong finals???? That is no joke for an event.... ::)
