Dear Mr. Bogan:
Thank you for contacting me regarding federal agency purchases of ammunition. I appreciate hearing from you.
As you know, several federal agencies have recently contracted to purchase large amounts of ammunition. For example, the Social Security Administration purchased 174,000 rounds of .357 hollow point ammunition for its 295 special agents to utilize while on duty carrying out law enforcement actions such as investigating disability fraud and executing arrest warrants. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ordered 46,000 hollow point rounds-originally listed due to a clerical error as destined for the National Weather Service-for NOAA Fisheries Office of Law Enforcement agents. The agencies have indicated that hollow point ammunition is standard issue for many federal law enforcement personnel.
As the former Attorney General for New Hampshire, I support ensuring that law enforcement officials have the equipment they need to carry out their duties. I also believe that, given our current fiscal crisis, federal agencies should ensure they are allocating resources responsibly to best accomplish their mission.
Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. As your Senator, it is important that I hear from the people I represent regarding the current issues affecting New Hampshire and our nation. Please do not hesitate to be in touch again if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
Signature
Kelly A. Ayotte
