No CCW at NRA Convention
« on: May 09, 2008, 11:52:04 AM »
I just read somewhere now that John McCain will be one of the speakers at the Leadership Forum on Friday May 16 the Secret Service will be using metal detectors. So you'll need to leave that firearm in the car or your hotel room.

Nice. My primary reason to attend this year is the Leadership Forum (but it is really a chance to meet Bane in person) and listen to the speakers. I have two tickets.

No way I'm going around un-armed for John McCain (or anyone). Why should my safety be compromised by John McCain?

edited: this is the site. an update says "You can carry at the convention center, but it’s unknown as to McCain’s security plans"

Not that I believe in conspiracies, but what better way for the anti's to give gun owners a black eye than for someone to take a pop at someone at the NRA convention
You can never have too many guns, or too much ammo

Hope you have a great time. The Secret Service is , well, the Secret Service,... 8)

It's nothing personal, they just want to be the only "armed" people.

Its just a Secret Service thing,..... Not necessarily a bad thing,...

Still hope its enjoyable,.. Post pics.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

I'd normally complain about a prohibition about CCW, like the time the meetings were held in Orlando and the Convention Center was completely off-limits for CCW.  That was something that we all griped about.

But a couple of years later, in Pittsburgh, where CCW was fine for the convention hall - Dick Cheney was the main banquet keynote - the heightened security was forewarned, limited to gaining entry to the banquet.  I didn't hear a single complaint - I think everyone can reconcile the difference and realize the need, and don't take it as an affront to their citizen status.  If you feel 'that' exposed, you simply don't attend the event.

I have met people who think the only people who have guns, have CCWs and are pro-NRA, and attend NRA conventions - are a homogenous bunch of McCain lovers, but that ain't the case.  I shudder to think of what kind of hay American media would make with even a one-man terror attack on McCain while at an NRA function.

That is NOT legal in FL.  You cannot post a place off limits to CCW!

Far as I know that has been in place since about 1988.  The State occupies the whole field and lists those places not allowed to carry.  FL Law 790

Still Haz, Even though Fla law says one thing. I do believe local jurisdiction can interdict and put a ban on carrying a gun in a place for a special event where heightened security is present. In Fla are you allowed to CCW in a place where security screens are in place or wands are used and all weapons must be surrendered to security until you leave? Thats the way it is in Colorado

As stated in 790 the State occupies the whole field of firearms law, period.  If the President is in town then Fed laws superseed but other than that if the place is not listed in FL 790 as a no carry you are allowed.  If someone tried to disalow me I would complain, ask to be shown their authority and sue if necessary.

15)  The Legislature finds as a matter of public policy and fact that it is necessary to provide statewide uniform standards for issuing licenses to carry concealed weapons and firearms for self-defense and finds it necessary to occupy the field of regulation of the bearing of concealed weapons or firearms for self-defense to ensure that no honest, law-abiding person who qualifies under the provisions of this section is subjectively or arbitrarily denied his or her rights. The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services shall implement and administer the provisions of this section. The Legislature does not delegate to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services the authority to regulate or restrict the issuing of licenses provided for in this section, beyond those provisions contained in this section. Subjective or arbitrary actions or rules which encumber the issuing process by placing burdens on the applicant beyond those sworn statements and specified documents detailed in this section or which create restrictions beyond those specified in this section are in conflict with the intent of this section and are prohibited. This section shall be liberally construed to carry out the constitutional right to bear arms for self-defense. This section is supplemental and additional to existing rights to bear arms, and nothing in this section shall impair or diminish such rights.
