OKLAHOMA HOUSE PASSES BILL TO ALLOW ARMED TEACHERS

The Oklahoma House passed The Special Reserve School Resource Officer Act by a 68-23 vote on Tuesday, Fox News reports. The measure would allow public school districts to choose if they want to allow armed teachers.

"Our children are grossly unprotected from an active violent threat," said Rep. Mark McCullough, R-Sapulpa, who introduced the bill in part as a response to the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. "We don't need to be willfully ignorant of the fact that this could happen."

Teachers must have at least 120 hours of specialized training if they want to be armed in the schools. The Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training would be in charge of the classes.

A few Democrats disagreed, according to Fox, saying 120 hours is not nearly enough and teachers do not have time to take a three-week training course.

The Oklahoma State House also passed a separate bill for private schools, allowing them to set their own policies on arming teachers.
Both bills must be approved by the State Senate before heading to the governor.

Since they hate cops and the military these dumb azzes don't realize that 3 weeks is 50% more than a Marine gets in Boot camp, and far more training than any police Dept.

I'm not saying that training and practice is not good, but 120 hours is not needed to be responsible.

You could fit a heck of a lot of information into 120 hours, if it's a well designed course it could be really good.
But I suspect the length was picked as a deterrent rather than for the opportunity to impart useful knowledge.

For a carry and self defense course, and that is all this really would be, I can't see more than sixteen hours in the class room and a day at the range.  The next hundred hours are going to be skill honing.

When I did Emergency Medical Technician training we did the entire initial training in 116 hours (lecture, hands on, and testing), and then 20 hours of ride along as an option.  First Aid and CPR took 16 of those 116 hours.  Are they teaching law enforcement, or are they preparing and certifying on site emergency reactors?

The latter, but everyone is freaked out as it involves kids. 120 hours? Fine, lets do it. They have the summer off. Lets see Gun Sight, IDPA and the NRA step up and offer these courses. They could certify them as a lot of other things along the way. RSO, firearms instuctor, whatever you need to be a ref at IDPA etc. The point is, lets make it work for us. Its not just CCW, we could be getting a lot more committed recruits.More than that it would be great press for us. Wayne said we need armed teachers. Well let him put his (my) money where his mouth is. How about a couple of free teachers weeks per summer summer at Gunsight and similar schools. they should eat it for the good press and as a stick in the eye. The rest, let the NRA fund. We said we wanted armed teachers not gun control. So lets give them armed teachers.

I'm calling BULL on you FQ!

It requires firearm safety, awareness, combat focus (apologies to Rob Pincus), and practice.  It does not take 120 hours!  I am fine with educational requirements like we do for carry permits being set by states.  I can see making it a 16 to 24 hour course.  But to let the uneducated sheep dictate how the sheep dog will prepare is stupid.  Remember, the reason having a sheep dog works so well is that the sheep are terrified of the dog.  The sheep don't want the dog, but they benefit from it.

Here is a basic course plan off my experience for a Minnesota training program:

Six hours Minnesota Permit to Carry a Pistol
Six hours NRA Refuse To Be A Victim
Eight hours NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home
Eight hours practical range time and test

This is a 28 hour course, and would be enough for anyone going into this setting.

You misread my post. I'm not saying I agree with it, I'm saying take advantage of it. IMHO a CCW should let you carry on campus. But you me, and a dozen others agree, the rest of the world doesn't.. So lets take the bone they threw us and make something out of it. That was my point, to do it in way that is useful (potentially leading to extra $$ as a part time job) and recruits people. 120 hrs is absurd, but it beats nothing, lets spend them wisely.

There should be a round count attached to it.  That's 15 days of class, 3 weeks.  The state should provide a minimum of 200 rounds per day which will help proficiency.  Then an additional 250 rounds per month absolute minimum with a some 4 hour refreshers to keep them sharp.

The teacher that get's this may not be a gun person...but the teach that is a gun person should love this.   

And...I dunno what it takes someone other than myself to keep their skills up, I'd like for them to stay sharp.  I wonder if the 250 a month is really enough...maybe a yearly refresher or a pre-semester refresher of 8 hours and 500 rounds to kick off a new semester.
