Questions persist after Ark. SWAT team fatally shoots 107-year-old man during weekend standoff

PINE BLUFF, Ark. –  Authorities in Arkansas halted a standoff this weekend when they shot a man who opened fire at them.

But when police announced that the incident left a 107-year-old man dead, it sparked a flurry of questions about how and why the life of such an elderly man could end at the hands of a SWAT team.

Authorities in Pine Bluff said they used negotiating tactics, a camera and gas before they shot Monroe Isadore on Saturday.

Still, that hasn't addressed concerns from some described Isadore on Monday as a pleasant, churchgoing man who was hard of hearing.

A police report The Associated Press obtained Monday said an Arkansas woman told officers she had gone to the house where Isadore was living temporarily to help him move to a new home.

I think the lesson here is don't shoot at SWAT.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. From the story I read yesterday, he shot at the SWAT guys once through the door and they backed off and tried to negotiate with him and then gas him out.

The 2nd time he shot at them, he wasn't so lucky.
Bravery and stupidity are often synonymous.  So are cowardice and intelligence.

"We Americans have been a rebellious band of freedom loving vagabonds from the very beginning. Our freedom from the crown and tyranny would not exist had it not been for the gun. That's a tradition we like to hold on to.  The same can't be said for the rest of you 'Subjects of the Queen'."--said to a Canadian friend who just doesn't get it.

He could have been having a medical issue.  Often things like TIAs  have warning signs of extreme anger and violance before they happen.

Combine that with the mentioned hardness of hearing and there were a lot of things that could have been at play.
"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

Regardless of the health condition, age, or anything else, when you send lead downrange somebody is going to respond.

Sad as it is, I don't see anything wrong with this response based on printed reports.

A violent TIA?  I've seen frustrated patients with TIAs, scared patients with TIAs but I have NEVER seen a violent TIA.
Insulin shock, yes.

Gaspasser's 'suicide by cop' seems to be as likely an answer as any.

Ark. police officer involved in standoff that left 107-year-old man dead placed on paid leave

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. –  A police officer involved in a weekend standoff that left a 107-year-old Arkansas man dead has been placed on paid leave, authorities said Tuesday.

Pine Bluff Police Sgt. David DeFoor said the officer was placed on administrative leave immediately after he shot at Monroe Isadore, who opened fire on authorities.

"That is department policy when there's an officer-involved shooting that they're put on admin leave until the investigation is completed," DeFoor said.

Police would not identify the officer, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing. DeFoor said he believed the officer placed on leave was the only one who fired at Isadore.

Authorities have said they tried using a camera, negotiating tactics, and gas before shooting Isadore. But that hasn't answered questions from residents in Pine Bluff, a community of about 50,000 people some 45 miles southeast of Little Rock. Some are struggling to make sense of how someone known as a pleasant, churchgoing man who was hard of hearing and sometimes used a cane could die in such an explosive confrontation.

The fatal shooting happened Saturday after police said they were called to a domestic disturbance at the house where Isadore was staying.

Laurie Barlow, 48, of Lonoke, told officers she had gone to the house where Isadore was living temporarily to help him move to a new home, according to a police report. She said Isadore had previously been excited about the move but that when she arrived Isadore barricaded himself in a room.

"Ms. Barlow stated his granddaughter finally got him to open the door and she went around to speak with Mr. Isadore, at that time she stated Mr. Isadore raised his arm and pointed a gun at her and stated 'You better stop breaking in to my house,'" the report said.

After police moved Barlow and the granddaughter across the street, Isadore fired at a door moments after police tried to contact him. A SWAT team, called out when negotiations failed, maneuvered a camera into the house to see how Isadore was armed, then stormed inside after deploying gas and a distraction device, the report said. When Isadore fired, the entry team fired back.

It's not clear why authorities moved into the home when they did.

"I don't know what was going at the scene that would make them go ahead and go in," DeFoor said. "When shots are fired, it changes the whole idea of let's sit out here and wait."

Prosecutors are expected to review the case as early as this week.
