Got demobed from ops in Lyons on Friday after 9 days of S&R. A lot of massive devastation, many homes lost, lives destroyed. Glad to hear that those on this site that were in the area are safe. It's gonna be a long time before things get back to normal.
One thing I want to stress to everyone here is HAVE A PLAN! We ran across those that had a plan for an emergency and they were doing ok & could get by, but there were more that didn't and they were the ones that were suffering ie: very little to no supplies (food, water, medicine etc.) to see them thru a week or more. Ran across some that just couldn't handle the situation mentally. Have a plan and prep yourself and family mentally.

I would also advise not building right on the bank of that scenic brook or stream as I saw in some of the news video.
As with the homes lost in the wild fires and hurricanes, a little common sense and foresight would have saved many.

Tom - You don't know how right you are. After the Thompson River flood in "76" many of those that lost their homes built right back where they were! Now call me stupid but why in Gods name would you rebuild on the very spot that damn near killed you and your family knowing that it WILL happen again? It may not be tomorrow or next yr. or 15 yrs. from now but it WILL happen AGAIN! ??? Don't screw with mother nature, like the old TV ad said "Don't mess with mother nature".
I find it rather interesting that some years ago the town voted to change the route of the river for what ever reason, guess mom showed them after it went back to it's original path.

Simple- to sell to some poor sap so that you can move to a safer location.  This is were local government may actually have a purpose-deny any building permit for these areas.  But they don't because they want the $$$ for these high value properties. ::)
