it's an extension of the victim-ology attitude that's going around.  It's always somebody else's fault.

Applies to everyone? It seems the police are willing to fire as many bullets as they want into a crowd of bystanders and face no consequences. They shot 17 innocent citizens on the streets of downtown NYC. They fired hundreds of bullets at the Boston bombers with no idea where they might end up. Luckily, and only luckily, no one was hit but the neighborhood must have looked like swiss cheese. I have asked, and have never received an answer, as to what LEO's are trained to do in a crowd situation. Are they trained to just blaze away, to spray and pray? What?

This is more of the  "Us and Them" attitude developing in the Police community.

They were shooting at a possible threat, but if they missed they would only be hitting other "thems"...so we were just protecting "Us".

Not only that, the one of "them" at the center of the incident is to blame for what he cause to happen to other  "thems".

A similar event happened in Cincinnati a few years ago.

The police tried to pull over a car in the city for some minor infraction....but the driver of the car took off instead and was pursued.  

Another officer close to the scene asked permission to join the pursuit but was denied.  He decided to join any way and was rushing to catch up when he ran a red light, hit a cross traffic vehicle killing at least one of the occupants.

The DA brought murder charges against the original driver cause by the unauthorized pursuit of the officer involved in the accident.

Not only that, this particular officer was disciplined previously for joining another pursuit when his request to join had been denied and he was given a suspension.

By this logic, an officer in pursuit could could take a short cut across a crowded playground and the person pursued would be responsible for the deaths of any children killed.

I go along with the perp being responsible for collateral damage but only if the police acted in a responsible manner...

That was not the case in either of these examples...

Solus, your first line sums it up, and I have pointed this one out many times.  Law enforcement has put themselves into a special class, and they have drawn an us vs. them line in the sand.

I thought mayor bloomberg made sure that all of the guns were taken off the streets.  For the cops to say they thought the guy was going for a gun is clearly a falsehood.

I work with a retired metro county sheriff's deputy.  He said that they were always taught to be aware of their backstop and bystanders.  None of us were there so we don't know the situation, but he said that since it sounds that a taser was able to subdue the subject after the shots were fired, it doesn't look good for the guys with the badges.

Ummmm, they protect their own? Not unlike what has gone on in Denver in the past. Years ago a Den. cop shot and killed a kid that had a nail clipper in his hand. The cop said he saw a flash, it was light hitting the nail clipper when the kid turned around, cop fired killing the kid, cop kept his job. Another tragedy, a guy had a can of pop in his hand, Den. cop thought gun. Shot & killed the guy, cop kept his job.
Not that I dislike the cops, I work with them all the time and some are friends. It just seems that some are way to jumpy & trigger happy. This past summer a SWAT cop in one metro Denver suburb shot & killed another SWAT cop that poked his head over a fence looking for a burglar. Jumpy?
