Dash cams, would you do it?
« on: January 02, 2014, 04:12:33 PM »
so i have been thinking for awhile about getting a dash cam.   for $200 you can get a good one and for $300 you can get one that does hd and can tape in total darkness.  I am looking mainly to change it from a he said she said if there was a wreck, but protecting myself from a overzealous leo is useful as well.( you never know)  Or has no fualt insurance, but it would be nice to be able to prove it was not my fualt.  They are double sided so you can watch a teen or even maybe catch a  car theif.  Would you install one?

More than likely NO
“As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people.  On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.”  H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun,  July 26, 1920.

How quickly can they be irrecoverably erased?

If the government wanted to make them a mandatory piece of equipment, I fight it tooth and nail....so not sure I'd want one installed unless I had that complete control over the contents being viewed.

i am sure they are all ssd drives so should not be hars to erase them.   if they were required i would fight too, but with the ass holes on the road now, it can save your butt.

I hear that they are very popular in Russia (that's why you see so many videos from there) to protect the user from "accident" scams and the cops strong-arming them.

Not sure what keeps the po-po from just taking the cameras tho...

taking the camera does not always get the recorder...  i would assume they have simlar laws there and don't look kindly to popos stealing stuff and destorying evidence, atleast not being cuaght at it. many of these things are blue tooth, so they could even be streamed some place( in the car or other places by mobile device)

No, I would not put one in.

No need to record more of my everyday life than is already tracked through the internet, cellphone, and vehicle computers.  All of that said, with the things they are building into cars already cameras will be a part of it before you know it.

New cars already do record stuff, and even limit/ control imputs and functions.    some times thats for the better(safety, drivabilty) like abs and traction control.  Some things are bad.    i have been hit(never been at fualt) 19 times in my life, have metal in my spine.  I have been sued by people that said i damaged their cars, so  anything i can do to protect myself is not a bad thing.

Living and driving on ice 11.5 months per year ... OK, it is only six month per year, but we deal with other slippery crap another three months, you can have your traction control and abs.

They are nothing more than tits on a boar.

The more I see people relying on the proximity alarms the more it scares me.  What ever happened to learning how to handle the two tons of metal you are piloting?

2 tons, what are you driving a compact?  Lol     the prox things scare me, my dad has them and they are messed up atleast every 6 months, had it at the dealer 4 times, even the dealer does not fix them, they send it to a shop that just does them or they come to the shop.     the parrell parking aids are even worse.    don't get me wrong, i don't like electronincs,  but over all they have made cars "better" a whole lot harder to work on and cost a lot more, but the only reason new cars get the milage they do, is computers.   they are safer too, even though they are lighter and not near as strong.  My last 1 ton was almost 1000 lbs lighter then the 1 ton i had before it.
